  2. My 7th grade history teacher was a man named Jim Roper and he played professional baseball during the depression. He was a sweet and mentoring fellow who regaled us with stories about his life experiences. One of those was that as a young boy, he knew George Washington Carver aka the “Peanut Man.” Mr. Carver would give him and his friends tins of shoe polish made from peanuts. The other story he told about was his time spent with a young Don Sutton as a mentor for the sport of Baseball. I love how history connects us lets us be part of the American legacy.
