Hall of Fame coach turned broadcaster John Madden, whose exuberant calls combined with simple explanations provided a weekly soundtrack to NFL games for three decades, died Tuesday morning, the NFL said. He was 85.Coaching the renegade Oakland Raiders, Madden compiled a stellar 103-32-7 regular-season record and led his team to victory in the Super Bowl after the 1976 season. But a fear of flying helped contribute to an early retirement from coaching. He became an even more impactful figure after he stopped coaching at age 42, entertaining millions who tuned in to NFL football. He also was the name behind the hugely popular sports video game, “Madden NFL Football.”
He was good for the NFL, back when the NFL was good. RIP Mr. Madden.
“Football players make football plays.” (Attributed to Madden but originated with Chuck Knox. But I’ll always remember Madden quoting it on TV and me falling off the couch.)
BOOM!
Damn, when I was a Broncos fan, there were some monumental games with the Raiders. Lord watching those games waere some fun times.
God speed Dude, you were the real deal.

Sea of hands, Holy Roller and Ghost to the Post all come to mind when I think of John Madden. They were my favorite team in the AFC during my youth. He’ll be missed.
Loved his offbeat style. RIP John.
“If you think about it, I’ve never held a job in my life. I went from being an NFL player to a coach to a broadcaster. I haven’t worked a day in my life.”
– John Madden
RIP
Loved John Madden. RIP
Hated Harry Reid. Good riddance.
2 things made Fox T a big, successful, deal:
1. Simpsons. – experts said it was dumb putting it against Cosby! Cosby #1 for 3 years before Bart. Bart dropped it to #10 in year 1 and #5o in year 2.
2, Maden football. Again “the experts” said Fox grossly overpaid for NFL
T. By Oct John an Pat were the biggest draw for NFL and Fox was king of Sunday ratings!
I never liked Da Raiders! Always liked seeing them get beat, still do. But Madden was good for the game.
It was always a good-natured thing, but when he was commenting on football plays, I wanted to rip that marker right out of his hand.
BOOM! Dang. RIP.
John Madden + the Snake Ken Stabler. Thanks for some great football, guys.
The guy loved the game more than the fame.
RIP. /Salute
Just damn.
I hated him as a coach because I was a Broncos fan. As a broadcaster, he was intelligent and witty and I enjoyed listening to him and his insights.
loved him in “the replacements”…..
sad….but still…..85!?!?!….he done good…. 🙂
I remember first hearing about Turducken on Monday Night Football while he ripped one apart with his hands and stuffed it in his face. Priceless.
He also hated to fly.
Football was never the same when he retired from commentary.
Cheers John!
The Thanksgiving turkey with eight drumsticks. They milked that one for years.
They ran a special on him Christmas day that I wanted to watch but missed it.
I’m sure they will run it again.
Oh and FUCK HARRY REID… REST NO, ROT IN HELL!
If EA Sports has any heart at all they will put John on the next “Madden” video game cover.
No love for Richard Marcinko?
Marcinko did a bunch of books. A true warrior. I’ve read most of them but Violence of Action stood out. Yea, I’d have to rate him way above any sports celebrity. Nice call.
Seems like there is a lot of dying going on lately. I’ve read a couple of Marcinko’s books. “The Rogue Warrior”, I read books like that and realize I don’t know where guys like that come from. There is a man that deserves to RIP!
