RIP Martin Mull – IOTW Report

RIP Martin Mull

Newser-

Martin Mull, whose droll, esoteric comedy and acting made him a hip sensation in the 1970s and later a beloved guest star on sitcoms including Roseanne and Arrested Development, has died at the age of 80, his daughter said Friday. Mull’s daughter, TV writer and comic artist Maggie Mull, said her father died at home on Thursday after “a valiant fight against a long illness,” per the AP. Mull, also a guitarist and painter, came to national fame with a recurring role on the Norman Lear-created satirical soap opera Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and with the starring role in its spinoff, Fernwood Tonight.

Fernwood Tonight’s theme song was an inverted version of the Tonight Show-

There was a show when I was 15 or so, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, it came on late at night and was a “hip” soap opera.

I liked it and hated it.

It took place in fictional Fernwood. They made a spinoff, Fernwood Tonight.

Mull was Barth Gimble, the host.

It was like a real cheap local Tonight Show.

It was sorta funny–mostly bizarre and silly.

  1. I remember him in the movie, “FM”, which I always thought his character was the premise for Johnny Fever on WKRP.
I think of him every time I hear “No Static At All” by Steely Dan.

  3. I loved his album Perfect/Not Perfect. I remember some of it was stand up and somebody in the audience blurted out something incomprehensible.
Mull said ‘isn’t it sad when cousins marry’

  4. On away tournaments the entire damn wrestling team would sing the Cumberland Gap song and then Men at the top of our lungs. They had to find volunteers to drive the bus.
