#41, Tom Seaver, The Franchise, is gone. He had Alzheimers.
MLB-
Tom Seaver, whose long, back-bending, knee-scraping strides toward the plate and aura of confidence and determination made him one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball, the greatest Met of all time and earned him the names “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise,” has died. He was 75.
“We are heartbroken to share that our beloved husband and father has passed away,” said his wife Nancy Seaver and daughters Sarah and Anne. “We send our love out to his fans, as we mourn his loss with you.”
Seaver pitched in the Major Leagues for 20 seasons, winning 311 games and recording a 2.86 ERA. A 12-time All-Star (10 times from 1967-77), he struck out 3,640 batters, which currently ranks sixth all-time but was third, behind only Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton, at the time of his retirement in 1986. Seaver led the National League in strikeouts five times from 1970-76, and he and Christy Mathewson are the only pitchers to record 300 wins, 3,000 strikeouts and an ERA below 3.00. Seaver’s 16 Opening Day starts is a Major League record.
RIP Tom Terrific.
I miss 1960’s baseball. Particularly the pitchers.
Seaver, Koufax, Drysdale, Denny McLain, Bob Gibson, Luis Tiant.
I second PHenry – those were pitchers.
75??? Aww.
I don’t remember him except for his name, and a commercial.
Heaven has an awesome baseball season this year.
Remember him well. Those were the days, listening to the games on my little transistor radio, when love of the game was the motivating factor for players. Rip Mr. Seaver.
@PHenry – one of my fondest sports memories is seeing Sandy Koufax pitch a no-hitter in Dodger Stadium. I was just a kid but I can still feel the excitement of that moment.
RIP Tom Seaver.
In the late 70’s I heard this joke.
Did I tell you about the guy with five penises? His pants fit like a glove.
About the same time Tom Seaver was in TV commercials for Haggar slacks. His tag line?
They fit like a glove.
We boys used to laugh ourselves silly.
RIP Tom Seaver. Does anyone remember Tom Terrific and Mighty Manfred anymore? Pity that baseball is pretty much dead; RIP.
Rod the trucker sent many, many men to MLB from USC in the 50’s, to 80’s. Tom was 1 of many.
Rod, like John Mckay, was a great recruiter and brought kids to SC who had talent. He enhanced their talents.
I have personal knowledge – Ron Fairly named our family cat HOWARD.
Another great pitcher Randy Johnson, won World Series with 2 teams, about 18 years ago the net had a great vid or a Johnson obliterating a pigeon flying between the mound an a hitter! Bird dissaeared!
Some of Rod’s guys you know if you were a MLB fan: Dave Kingman (What does Tommy think of ***!), Fed Lynn, Steve Kemp + Mark McGwire.
Ronny, as a boy, hit a home run at Yankee Stadium in a Little league exhibition about 70 years ago. Ron was a Southpaw and the fence in right field was only 250 Ft. Still unusual for a little kid, and he was a wee lad then.
Yes BRAD Im old!

I remember as a boy when the Phillies would play against Seaver and the Mets. The Phils would pencil in the lineup bench player Tommy Hutton. For some reason, Hutton (a .248 lifetime BA) would slap silly Seaver like he was a soy boy in the Antifa ranks. The Seaver-Carlton match ups were some of the best in the business. And these guys went deep into the game…not the pansy-ass 6 innings crap you see now. You can rest now, Tom. Thanks for some of my best childhood memories.
Now you’re lucky to see a pitcher pitch 5 innings.
He left NY because the presstitutes were writing bullshit about his wife.
He was a Marine ya know:

Factoid, Seaver was in the opposing dugout, the Red Sox, when the Mets won the Series in ’86:

Thanks for those TERRIFIC memories Tom. Rest now.
(Sandy Koufax was the greatest left hander of all time).
