Senators on Both Sides of the Aisle Want to Take Control of Tariffs

US News

Senators have introduced bipartisan legislation to grant Congress more power over instituting tariffs on other countries following President Trump’s announcement of wide-ranging taxes on nearly all U.S. foreign trading partners.

The bill, co-sponsored by Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) — both members of the Senate Finance Committee — would “reaffirm” the role of Congress in setting and approving trade policy, according to a release from Cantwell’s office.

If passed, the Trade Review Act of 2025 would require the president to notify lawmakers of an imposition or increase in tariffs within 48 hours, explaining the reasoning and providing analysis of the impact on American businesses and consumers. More

  1. Grassley is pathetic, the old bastard has spent his entire life as a politician. His degree was political science.
In 1958 at 25 he was elected to Iowa legislature.
    1974 elected to US House.
    1980 elected to Senate.

He’s worth over $7 million though. Maybe DOGE needs to add him to the list.

  2. Yes, tariffs are bad. But what’s worse is allowing other countries to unilaterally impose tariffs on us without retaliation because our so-called leaders think tariffs are bad but can only control US tariffs and not other countries’ tariffs. That’s just classic libertarian dumbfuckery, and the only reason the shitlibs are aligning with the GOP is because it fucks over Trump.

    It’s like the pacifist’s dilemma:

Violence is wrong. But if you don’t defend yourself when someone initiates violence against you, you’re life will be destroyed soon. Pacifist benefit from the violence practiced by others to maintain public order, and then engage in moral preening because they’re not doing the dirty work.

Anti-tariff dogmatists are the same way. They usually have no skin in the game because they’re government employees living off the taxpayer dime and growing national debt. So they don’t live in the real economy like the rest of us.

In the real world, when some country like Japan puts a 700% tariff on US rice to protect Japanese rice farmers from competition because they Yen is a more valuable currency than the US dollar, then the US leaders are stupid not to retaliate with comparable tariffs on imported Japanese goods to protect domestic production from unfair trade practices. When Japan capitulates, then you ease off. That’s how tariffs are supposed to be used.

But, instead, the no skin in the game assholes in congress just fuck their own people, collect their foreign bribes from K street and then regurgitate some econ 101 theory about tariffs to justify being useless assholes screwing their own domestic work force (just like they do when the facilitate illegal immigration).

  3. Congress wants to control this??
We need these tariffs to correct what Congress has done for the last 80 years: drive the USA into a National Debt ABYSS and generously give to ungrateful ‘allies’ so the legislators can skim their personal fortunes off these transfers.

We need a new National Holiday: Punch Your Legislator In The Mouth Day!
