NBC News

A World War II-era steamship that sank along with its captain in a strong storm in 1940 has been found at the bottom of Lake Superior after a 10-year search.

The 244-foot SS Arlington lay under 650 feet of water around 35 miles north of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula for 74 years and was only found after a dogged shipwreck hunter kept up the painstaking hunt. More

  1. Well at least bring up the steering wheel and put it in a museum. It would be an added bonus if the captain’s fingers were still gripping the wheel. I’d pay to see that!

Fascinating story, but I am confused. First, the US was not in WWII in 1940 and second, the ship sank in 1940 and was just found after 74 years?

    Did I miss something?

I’m guessing that you’re missing that America joined a war that started in 1939.

“World War II or the Second World War was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945”

  3. I found it odd that something that sank in the US in 1940 was phrased as being WWII era. It just struck me as odd.

But that still doesn’t explain how a ship that sank in 1940 was just found after 74 years. Maybe it was the second one that made the first one not read right to me.

  4. As many times as I’ve been to Lake Superior, only once was it warm enough to wade for more than ten-fifteen minutes. Very deep lake and very lovely. Its average depth is 483 ft with a maximum depth of 1,333 ft.

People usually bring their swimsuits that just stay in their luggage.

  5. ^^^I have no idea what the hell happened there. I did not type that mess. Google has my phone all screwed up. I had to take it to my provider this morning where they did a factory reset and said they fixed it. Apparently they didn’t.

  6. @Claudia, I spent probably 10 minutes with my fat fingers giving a lengthy description of how large the Great Lakes are for those that aren’t familiar and I got that instead.
But for everyone else, they are huge and I would describe Lake Superior, Michigan and Huron as inland fresh water oceans.
People who have never seen them are usually amazed when they do.
