17 Comments on Slapping the Oil Can… It’s Not a Euphemism
Isn’t that the Seinfeld theme?

Carl Radle was the bassist you needed. He wasn’t very imaginative, but he kept time better than a drummer.

Good here? You should check him out on youtube.
While you’re there, check out Victor Wooten and Laytar.
The time of the bass as a lead instrument, has arrived.

I’m confused. Again. Is Slapping the Oil Can the same thing as spanking the monkey? Inquiring minds and all.

No, Brad. You slap the oil can when you’re a quart low. You spank the monkey when she’s been a bad monkey. So, check your dipstick. Then check your monkey. If she’s been bad, oil up and spank it.

Ok Brad and GM, I laughed out loud with both of your posts!!! Thank you. I needed that.
I have no idea what spanning an oil can is about but the young guy sounds like he knows what he is doing. Just enjoy and don’t question. That is what I have learned recently.
I invented the oil can … AND taught that boy how to play.

Why does the oil can say explosive powder on it?

There’s a dude(davie504) with a channel on youtube that features bassists from around the world. It’s pretty entertaining & humorous too. It does my heart good to see that there are amazingly talented people out there & so many of them are youngins’.

Wow, very impressed. I haven’t really heard many great bassist lately, but I do remember listening to John Patitucci and Chick Korea jazz jams in the 90’s.

@Bongo — I second your davie504 recommendation. I’d never heard of him before last night when, on pure whim, I clicked on one of his YT-suggested videos. He’s very good and HIGHLY entertaining in his own somewhat smug way.

I love the painter’s tape covering the spout. Nice touch. Gotta keep that oil from leaking out.

His playing style reminds me of Les Claypool and Primus.
