A new bill moving through the New Mexico legislature would make the state the first in the nation to have its own official aroma: green chiles roasting in the fall.
Democratic state senator William Soules sponsored Bill 188, which seeks to add to the roster of New Mexico’s state symbols. Other symbols include the yucca flower, roadrunner, cutthroat trout and New Mexico black bear.
If the bill passes, the state aroma would join some of New Mexico’s more unusual symbols, like the bolo tie (the official state tie) and the air balloon (the official state aircraft). It would go into effect on June 16, according to the New Mexico legislature’s website. More
I imagine my state’s aroma would be scent of farm fields after the annual manure spreading in the fall (Wisconsin). What about your state? – Dr. Tar
California’s can be Shit Steaming in the Sun.
Nevada: Pot & dashed hopes
I am glad that New Mexico’s legislature has so much time on it’s hands. All other issues have been resolved. Congratulations.
But I think Yuma’s aroma might be a little different than the rest of the state. More like migrants and rotting migrants in the sun.
So much dirt in the air today that you can’t smell anything in my part of Texas.
It seems no one can think up more ways to be ineffective at their job than a politician.
Hollywood and D.C. will have to fight over who gets BULLSHIT, as an official aroma.
We have a bagel factory near us. When they are baking the onion bagels or everything bagels, the smell in the neighborhood will drive you crazy. I vote for that.
Oregon: Marijuana.
New York: The foul stench of 100,000 unwashed migrants.
Maryland – The stench from all the dirty laundry of the DC politicians and lobbyists who live here.
Decatur, Illinois. A.E.Staleys was THE manufacturing plant in that town town. It was a food product they made. Maybe a syrup?
The odor was EVERYWHERE and in EVERYTHING. Including the towels in our motel room. Yeah, the locals understood how strong it was, but shrugged their shoulders when asked if it bothered them.
Yikes. I was SO glad I didn’t have to be there longer than I was. Never experienced anything like that since.
wv……the mountain olive bloom in the spring……just yummie 🙂
Ohio: The smell of burning butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and isobutylene.
New Mexico finally got something right
NY – Brimstone
Texas: The smell of brisket smoking on the pit.
I grew up in Battle Creek, MI. Home of Kelloggs, Post and Ralston Purina. In the spring, when our High School opened the windows for fresh air, the odor would gag us so much the teachers had to close the windows.
Imagine Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Post Toasties and Ralston Purina dog food. All mixed together! 🤢 🤮
Oh, but where I live now, fresh, ripe, juicy apples. Yes. Especially in the fall when the orchards open up their u-pick season. Glorious.
Dear Claudia,
I wish you get to experience Plumeria on the breeze.
At dawn, with bird song.
It’s heaven.
PS: I recorded the birdsong. Moving pictures too. Hope to share it with you and the critters. Working on it. LYA
