SNAP Back on Snacks

The Federalist

Apair of Republican senators are taking aim at taxpayer subsidies for hyper-addictive junk food delivered to the poor under Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Last week, Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama introduced the Healthy SNAP Act, which would reform federal food stamps to prohibit items with virtually zero nutritional value, such as candy and soda. More

  1. …and STOP talking about “single moms!” as if that’s some kind of paragon of virtue. I’m sick to death of hearing about (mostly young) “single moms” given as the best reason for writing freebies legislation — or any legislation.
You’d think we were in the post-WWII era and fathers/husbands all died as heroes on the war front.

Given that we are trying to shift our culture back to one of embracing responsibility and accountability, it’s time to take away the main gov’t props that make single parenting such an easy option; one that usurps couples having the ability to divorce so readily instead of making better choices to begin with. Suddenly it might not seem so darn easy to split the sheets for frivolous reasons.

  2. No welfare benefits to single mothers unless they identify the baby daddy, then go after him for support (or he loses HIS welfare). Put Jerry Springer in charge of verifying fatherhood. Put it all on pay-for-view.

  3. I remember my first job making $3.10 an hour. Going to the Winn-Dixie store, scraping by on hamburger helper 3 days a week and paying $300/month rent. Still remember the guy in line ahead of me buying a lot of Ribeye steaks with food stamps then getting beer and cigs with cash. Wish I could have afforded at least one steak.

  4. @Dumb Bunnies – Just saw this same thing at the grocery store about a month ago. Guy was working age, about as big around as he was tall. No whole foods at all and a lot of it. I thought it was disgusting enough before I saw he was paying for it with EBT. As a parting gift, he interrupted the checker to wait because he spied the impulse candy racks — emptying about a half a box of super size Milky Way bars and depositing those on the checkout belt along with all the other junk.

It’s a scam. And like the rest of gov’t hand-outs, I’m betting at least 60% of the cost of running these programs is fraud, waste, and abuse.

When I was stationed in Germany (late 70s-early 80s), the German government had what they called “Workfare”.
You wanted to suck off the Government teat? Then you do the work the Government assigns you. Dropout or PhD, you did the work; sweep streets, pick up trash, file paperwork, stuff envelopes, secretary, typist, construction, whatever.

Like a few other guys here I do all the meal prep. Was craving a chunk of red meat. It’s just me and the old ball and chain. So I picked up a really good looking Ribeye. Plenty of marble. We don’t eat like we used to and one steak split will more than suffice. $32.00 for just a little over a pound. But dang, it was tasty. It’s going to probably take at least a year for Trump’s policies to have an effect on these prices. I’m patient.

Wow, I was looking back around 1974 about 1 year after college graduation. And to think this was going on still in 2025. Gosh nearly 50 years of corruption. So sad…

So glad that after 50 years of working my bottom off I can now have a Ribeye steak and not worry about financing it.
I have gone from medium rare to no-pink – fully cooked and boy are those good especially on the grill!
