David Berkowitz, the serial killer who terrorized New York City in the 1970s and dubbed himself “Son of Sam,” is being treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital for a heart ailment, sources have confirmed.
News that Berkowitz was awaiting emergency heart surgery in Albany on Monday was first reported in the New York Post. Berkowitz, who has been in prison since 1978, is an inmate at the Shawagunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, Ulster County.
A statement from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said, “Inmate Berkowitz has been transferred to an outside hospital and remains in the custody of the Shawangunk Correctional Facility. DOCCS cannot comment on an inmate’s specific medical condition.”
The only hospital in Albany with a secured facility for treating inmates is Albany Med.
Berkowitz killed six people and wounded seven others with a .44 caliber revolver between 1976 and 1977. His killing spree was highly publicized in the press, as he taunted police with messages and eluded a manhunt for months.
Most of his victims were women, usually with long, dark brown hair. He also targeted couples in cars.
While the press had dubbed him the “.44 Caliber Killer,” Berkowitz referred to himself as “Son of Sam” in letters left near the bodies of two victims. He claimed to have been obeying the orders of a demon that took the form of a dog belonging to his neighbor Sam.
In an interview with CBS News in August, 40 years after his arrest, Berkowitz said the shootings were “a break from reality, thought I was doing something to appease the devil. I’m sorry for it.”
A website touted as “The Official Website of David Berkowitz former Son of Sam” was created by supporters under the name AriseandShine.org.
The site includes interviews with him and some of his own writings, in which he claims to have found Jesus Christ in 1987 and has apologized to his victims. He has started a Christian outreach ministry in the prison and is known to his supporters as the Son of Hope, according to the website.
Berkowitz is serving 25 years to life for each of the six murders. His next parole hearing is set for May.
Maybe he’ll get a “diversity” doctor who will use his d!ck as an artery bypass.
He should get paroled in May, by being sent to Hell. That should appease the Devil.
My dog is telling me that any taxpayer funding for heart surgery should go to someone much more deserving.
