Starting Sep. 1: No License Needed To Kill Feral Hogs In Texas

Townhall:

We’ve all been there. Your small kids are out playing in the yard. Suddenly, within three to five minutes of you opening the door, there are 30 to 50 feral hogs running through. How are you supposed to kill them, you may ask? While this recent scenario caused perhaps the most unexplainable comedic event on Twitter in quite some time, feral hogs are apparently such a problem in Texas that you no longer need a license to hunt them. Starting September 1, you can just go out and shoot them however you please so long as it’s public land.

In March of 2019, the Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) Commission made several rule changes for the 2019-2020 hunting season. Amongst those rules were several de-regulations. According to ReformAustin.com, “legislators passed Senate Bill 317 to address the 1.5 million feral hogs in Texas that cause around $400,000,000 of damage each year. The new law exempts anyone hunting on public lands from needing a license to hunt feral hogs.”

In early August, father Willie McNabb earnestly asked Twitter in the middle of a heated gun debate, “Legit question for rural Americans – How do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?”  read more

  1. We’ve had no license, no season, and no limit on feral hogs for a while. Great fun! I use a Marlin 336 in 45/70 with a forward mount 2x scope. Fast, fun and the hog is dead by the time it hits the ground.
Great way to spend a day with your buddies and have a tasty reward. Roasting it over an open fire is a must-do activity.

  2. I’d go. Not too keen on eatin’ them though. A bit gamey.

And yeah, not much public land per hunter, but all the hunters are spread out over the state…..which I hear is somewhat expansive.

  3. No, No NO!
We can save these beautiful creatures!
Let us trap and relocate as many as we can to an environ that is both similar in clime, and to one where their attributes will stand them in good stead.
Say Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the like?
    And France

  5. @JDHasty, I had my meat processor turn some of my boar into Black Forest sausage and Cheesy Bavarian sausage. I’ve been sharing with friends and a couple of neighbors. It is delicious! Haven’t tried the smoked ham or other cuts yet.

  6. Yeah JD. They do that with the skinny ass Javalinas out here. Cant hunt them though except jan an feb….so….no idea where the sausage comes from.

  7. Back up. Texas wild boars ain’t Javalinas. Totally different species.

    Now I really want in.

Whew! I thought this was about eatin’ them lil’ peccaries or however you spell it. Texas has wild PORK. Hellz yeah.

  9. We’ve been good to go on our own land for a long time here in Texas. Kill them all year long however you want. There’s other rules, too, but to kill them on public land, you needed a general hunting permit. Never has been a specific license for feral hogs in Texas.

So the reporter’s understanding and suggestion are lame. He could shoot them from his front porch in that scenario. Even in the city it would be self defense against a mass of dangerous animals.

    They’re worse than any pitbull.

Also – they’re going to let people hunt public lands without any permit?

Wow, I had no idea things were that desperate here.
