Study Using Freshmen College Women Suggests 10,000 Steps A Day Doesn’t Keep the Pounds Away

Independent

Over the last few years, the theory that walking 10,000 steps a day has become popularised as the key to health and weight loss.

However, according to a study, walking 10,000 steps a day won’t actually prevent weight gain, or lead to weight loss.. More

  1. 3,600 calories per pound. Unless there is a thyroid or other unusual issue involved the math says it all.
Burn what you eat and your weight stays the same.
Eat too many or too few calories and that changes.

  2. Here’s another key, aside from the obvious don’t eat junk food – if you are busy you won’t eat as much. Busy with physical activity you will both burn more calories and won’t eat as much – but you will eat what you need.
Weight control is pretty simple. But you have to stay aware.

  3. I have spent the bulk (snicker) of my life being overweight. I am 5′ 10″ and have been as high as 325, at which time brought on diabetes type II. From about 5 years old to 53.5 years. High School football and a few other brief periods of 2 years or less had me at a more lean body weight.

Finally after all these years, by flipping the food pyramid, I have been around 185. Took me about 5 months on KETO + OMAD and no exercise. I MUCH prefer my new life with much improved quality of life and physique. After loosing the weight I started lifting again and running (sprint intervals) and jump rope for cardio. I could not run for quite a few years as my knees just would not take it anymore. Those pains are gone.

My story is just another part of the false reality with which I have existed in this world, following the expert consensus advice. I see YHWH making manifest these false premise to all, but it is for us to decide whether we want to continue on the path man has created for us or His eternal paths of old. Turning the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). YHWH restores, rebuilds and repairs the old paths, waste places and breaches.

The time is at hand to repent (teshuvah) and return to His ETERNAL weights and measures.

May YHWH bless and keep you and yours, in all which you put your hand
    Peace be unto you

  4. Check out cellular molecular biology. the only way to burn the energy stores (fat) is when insulin is low. High insulin shuts down release of fats from the fat cells. Period. So, what lowers insulin?
    1. starvation
    2. stop eating carbs
Item 1 is called “fasting” and, yes, you do that every day when you’re asleep. Extend the “fast”. Do a duckduckgo on Dr. Fung the guru of fasting.
Item 2 is stop eating carbs(sugars) because the body spikes insulin when you eat carbs(sugars). Your body will switch over to burning fat automagically. duckduckgo any low-carb-high fat dietary science such as dietdoctor.com

Exercise is mostly useless unless you to 1, 2 or both. And all variations are free. Other search words: “keto”, “intermittent fasting”, low-carb high fat (LCHF), etc. Even the American Diabetes Association now includes them as standard of care.

Cellular molecular biology. Pure science. Pure chemistry. Managing your insulin and being able to switch to fat burning is the only way. Everything else is pure …horse stuff.

For the lazy: insulin, a powerful hormone, rules. No matter how much you exercise, if you eat lots of little “meals” with sugars/carbs, your insulin will be high just about all the time. Which means you can run a 10K a day and still gain weight. Even if you deplete a lot of the sugar stores, the body will reload them when you’re not running.

  5. I’ve been cursed or blessed(?) with a strange metabolism. If I don’t exercise I will lose weight. The only way I can put on weight is regular exercise with light to medium weights and cardio at least 45 minutes per day. Even then I can only manage to stack on around 10 lbs over high school graduation weight (167 lbs exactly). I always walk 4 to 5 miles a day unless it’s below 25 degrees (or rain), like today was, the first cold day since March I haven’t walked.

When I was in college I got in an accident mountain biking. Had jaws wired shut for 3-1/2 weeks after 2 weeks in the hospital. Sat around on the couch because I had triple vision from cracks in my eye sockets dangerously close to optic nerve, drugs, and concussion recovery. I consumed at least 5000 calories per day with weight gain formula drinks, eggs, ice cream, ground up pasta & breads, rice, anything blended up that would fit thru a straw. I was CONSTANTLY eating because I was freaking out over weight loss and it took longer to eat. At the end of 5-1/2 weeks I was down to 125 lbs. At 6’3″.

  6. If the female college students in the study are the same ones who participated in the Antifa riots in 2020, it will take a LOT more than10,000 steps a day to take off the excess weight from them.

  7. …when I was in college, I could have thought of WAY more interesting studies into the biology of 10,000 college women I could have made, and I had just to tool to probe with too, just sayin’…

  8. I’ll zip my lip at some of the shit posted here and cut to the chase. Lifting weights tears down muscle cells. Actually damages them. Your body burns energy all during that healing process. In other words, even longer then while your sore. If you’re a lazy turd, that’s a problem only you can solve.

  9. @Brad

No one can deny the science of tearing down and rebuilding the muscle fibers as you describe, of course that is an awesome means to burn calories. It has been one of my favorite means for conditioning, my entire life. Though I do not have the time or intensity that I once had.

But you cannot deny the direct correlation between the change in the standard american diet in 1976 (or 1977) when some schmuck filtered statistics in his study (I cannot remember his name) and by false cause and effect, changed the long standing good natural fat intake to processed sugar (all types) and immediately saw obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc… begin it rapid increase to the point where we are at today.

The science is clear that our bodies operate most efficiently on fat calories, which will create any needed glycogen through its own natural process. That is not to say that you cannot eat carbs (sugars), there are just no essential carbs unlike fats and proteins.

With the “lazy turd” syndrome that the average American has become, we cannot keep increasing the HUGE calorie intake that we have and not have consequences. I meant to include a caveat to my post regarding the fact that there are always outliers or REALLY INTENSE people who are not able to sit still and always moving, etc…

I postulate that ALL of the great societal improvements over the last century or more have had ill affects to our genome. The [un][barely]tested foods, chemicals, medications, etc… and MASSIVE amounts of sugar (cancer LOVES sugars) have created a less than optimal gene pool. Some of the science regarding SOY products is extremely scary and this dung is in baby formula. So, like children in kindergarten, they start degrading their bodies and minds as early as possible.

But hey, I am as ignorant of a hillbilly as you can find ANYWHERE. So, live the way the world tells you to (not directed at you Brad) and enjoy your dung sandwich.

For MUCH more information see YouTube video channels from Dr. Fung, “What I’ve Learned” and many more that have been at the forefront of this restoration of good dietary information FACTS.

Brad, after losing the weight, I started a 3 day a week workout (MWF) on my fasting days and then carb intake of approx 40gm 24-36 hours later and then my full meal. This is the “most efficient” cycle for me and was able to put on some nice mass to fill up some of the loose skin that comes from a 48″ waist down to a 31″!

YHWH bless and keep you always.
    Shalom

  10. You want to burn fat? Lift weights. Combine it with HIIT cardio. Also slow reps. 2 seconds up, 4 seconds down (negative). Slow reps actually burn fat more than fast reps. Think of the muscles like a fat burning oven. The bigger they are, the more fat they can burn. I lost 45 pounds with resistance training and no cardio. I hate cardio. Of course I modified my diet as well. It would have come off faster with cardio.

  11. “But you cannot deny the direct correlation between the change in the standard american diet in 1976 (or 1977) when some schmuck filtered statistics in his study”

I didn’t read all that novel. I stopped at what I quoted. I mean no offense, but I Control my diet. No one else. And here’s the deal, if you’re not a lazy turd, and you’re training your ass off, your body will crave the food you need. Lifting weights is not for everyone. I get that. But it is the closest thing to the fountain of youth there is. If you’re serious about your health it should be a priority in your life. If not, your the reason stores provide those electric carts.

Slow reps. Well that was unexpected. You bet cha. The older you are the more important the perfect rep is. Slow it down. Do some rest pause. But us older peeps need that slow contraction. You’re on the money pal.

  13. The reality is that todays food products are LOADED with sugar. Check out how much is loaded into products where you’d never suspect you’d find it, bread for example.
People are tormenting themselves trying to get weight off and thinking they’re eating relatively healthy food and they’re not.
Mass produced food is garbage yet it’s everywhere.

  14. You will burn a heck of a lot more calories having sex at least 4 times a day in college. I found college freshman living on campus to be nymphomaniacs once they leave home. Sorry Dads, but if you ever went off to college, you know.

  15. I walk on average 14,000 steps a day. The only way to lose weight is to stop drinking, stop pounding down the carbs, and don’t weigh yourself everyday. I’ve lost over 40+ pounds, lost my desire for wine. After first week of abstaining, your body gets use to the shock. Any amount of walking does make you feel better. JMHO.

  16. @ Bob Rumsford, I am with you on flipping the useless food pyramid. The government involved itself in nutrition and as a result we have an explosion of Type 2 diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol cardiac conditions. Eating the way my grandparents ate and ditching sugar refined carbs literally melted away the excess 48 pound baggage I was carrying around.

Last night the husband and I were watching ‘Holiday Inn’ and ‘White Christmas’ and marveling at how small and fit people were. They ate real food, no instant in the microwave and no empty nutritional value food. Bring on the lard that has 70% of the same good fats as olive oil.

I have been told I am stupid for following a ‘fad’ diet by people who do not know the low carb/good fat diet was used to control diabetes in the 1700’s long before the development of insulin. Once the government stuck its nose into what we ate we were screwed and the pharmaceutical companies have gotten rich off it.

A neighbor is always moaning about her excessive weight. I pointed out she is eating 2-3 heavy starches at most meals. At the same time she drives her enormous Yukon 300 feet down the driveway to simply get mail or drag her trash cans to the road. Not a good combo.Does she listen? Hell no because her doctor tells to her cram down carbs and cut the fat. At the rate she is going she will not see her youngest graduate high school.

I highly recommend all three of Gary Taubes books if anyone is interested.

  17. Usain Bolt takes about 50 steps to go 100 meters. And his percent of body fat is probably about 7%. Meanwhile, a marathon runner probably takes 25,000 steps to finish his race, and his fat percentage is maybe 3%

It aint the steps; its the intensity of the steps.

  18. @Eugenia Preach on sister!

It was several years ago when I was sitting in the truck outside of some store where my wife was shopping, and I watched as people filed in and out of the store when I realized that the majority (75% at least) were mildly to greatly obese (children and adults). This stood out to me so much (not really an epiphany, but really HIT me) because growing up through the 70’s (graduated HS in 1983), *I* was always THE fat kid at school, parties, etc… always being made fun of with names like baby huey or flubber (rhymes with my last name).

The contrast is night and day and, as you point out, the means for controlling diabetes, etc… was well established. Natural (animal) fats are GREAT! The fat of the lamb or bull was a sweet savor to YHWH. His food guide (Lev 13) should be our guidepost. As ALWAYS is the case, science or “science” sometimes catches up with His eternal Truth.

As many others have pointed out, physical exercise is a REQUIREMENT now that we have so much leisure time (taking complete advantage of it) where many (not all) go from a sedentary “desk” job to another spot to plant our glutes. With the natural high fat or KETO-ish percentages for fats/protein/carbs for our diet, the 10k steps would be more than effective.

Sadly, the truth of the human condition is that we are all too happy to fall in line with the way of the world, trusting the continuous cycle of man leading us astray. Thinking that we are SO AWESOME and “SMOT” with all we have deduced of creation.

The “reality” of this worlds reality, is, well, unreal.

May Almighty YHWH bless and keep you ALL.

  19. My family has dabbled in weights for decades. I started lifting as a kid, and have been doing it off and on for 50 years. Ive never been fat a day in my life, even in times when Ive been an inactive slug

The secret is muscle tissue; it has greater metabolic demands than fat. Indeed the muscle cell preys on the fat cell. If you keep sugar and carbs to a minimum, your body will convert fat to energy to feed the muscle cell. So build muscle
