In 1974, pediatrician William Crook wrote a letter to a medical journal in which he named cane sugar “a leading cause of hyperactivity” (what we now call ADHD). This truism has been so persistent that it was immortalized on an Old Navy “Let’s Blame the Sugar” T-shirt for babies. Researchers debated Crook’s claim for decades.

The scientific consensus now? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “more research discounts this idea than supports it.” They cite one study as a possible explanation for the myth’s persistence, in which “mothers who thought their children had gotten sugar rated them as more hyperactive […] compared to mothers who thought their children received aspartame.” It was belief about sugar’s ill effects that biased the mothers’ perception.

  1. These same wankers are the ones that slipped a decimal point way back when and had everyone believing that spinach is RICH in iron. Spinach has no more iron that pizza. But people still believe that spinach has more iron than damn near any plant.

    The mistake was corrected long ago too, but the lie has refused to die. Just like this sugar lie.

    Stop telling us WHAT to eat. Just tell everyone to eat as healthy and responsible as possible and keep your unelected first moose out of our children’s lunches!

  2. Scientists have known for many decades that sugar/carbs causes hyperactivity, diabetes, obesity, heart/artery issues and many other health problems.

    Skewing data didn’t just recently start with globull warming. Big name labels of processed foods know exactly what they’re doing.

  3. do strict low carb (atkins style) for a couple months and see what it does for your body.

    Take away sugary drinks and snacks from your kids and see what it does for them.

    Conversely, drink 32oz of soda every day and see what it does for your body.

    Too much sugar is not good for you. Also, too much beer is not good for you, too much liquor is not good for you, too much caffeine is not good for you, too much tobacco is not good for you.

    Too much water too fast? It screws up your blood and will kill you.

    No-one can possibly deny that there is HFCS in all kinds of stuff and that we consume far too many carbs on a daily basis, kids included. It can’t be good for any of us.

    The best I ever felt was when I did a so-called ‘Daniel Fast’ for 21 days. Look it up. No meat, no sugar, no HFCS, no processed crap. It’s basically a detox and it does you serious good.

    In fact, I might just do that again here soon. It isn’t necessarily HARD, but you end up reading labels like a vegan foodie hipster.

  4. Dr. William Crooke told my parents, in the 50’s, that my asthma was all in my head. He said this despite the fact that both my parents smoked around me and my siblings in the house, out of the house, in the car, everywhere but church. Dr. Crooke probably smoked while he said that. Anything he ever said has no credibility with me.
