  2. My dad struggled to make ends meet but he always gave me and my sister something special for Christmas. There were many “bests” but the Honda 90 Trailbike was probably best because it gave me FREEDOM. I miss my dad.

  5. Sorry but I grew up in foster care before it was stylish to do so – and had few presents – made worse by the gifts and Christmases of those of my friends.

But before you cry for me understand it only made me more appreciative o God’s blessings I have now including knowing that I would give everything to my daughter and share with others less fortunate.

Possessions make you into a dog faced pony soilder.

  10. As a child, I would have to say record albums. The first one I recall receiving was Elton John’s “Caribou” album, then Aerosmith’s “Rocks” the next year. As a teen, I received a pair of CCM Colt hockey skates. I still have them in their original box. Don’t recall anything in particular as an adult, but grateful for it all.

  11. Christmas of 1960, I got a Schwinn Deluxe Tornado bicycle. My father paid $59.95 and that was a lot of money back then. Back then, Schwinn’s were built in Chicago, and they were built like a tank. It was the only bike I ever had because it could be repaired with parts from the Schwinn bike shop. I must have ridden a million miles on that thing. Yesterday morning, I found a home movie that my grandfather took of me riding that bike in front of the home I grew up in.

“And, not a Christmas present, but my father died suddenly on Christmas morning when I was 30-something. That left a pall on a lot of Christmases thereafter.”

…my wife lost her father after an MI left him brain dead and it fell to her to let his decerebated body pass on 23 Dec 2010, so through that experience with her and how long it took for her to be able to truly celebrate again, I can relate.

Because it was his previously stated wish, she had him parted out and we were told 18 families got a Christmas gift of him, so between knowing the good that he had done in parts of him continuing to live in others and her abiding faith in the Lord, she was able to do what needed done to arrange a funeral 600 miles from home that we didn’t expect to happen with out 11 yo in tow and the symbols of the season hanging everywhere we looked like a cruel mockery of our loss. It was only a few years ago we returned to relative normalcy of celebration, but always preceded with a visit to the cemetery in commemoration of that awful day that preceeded the celebration of the most joyous day in history.

I’ll leave it there, lest I again arouse BFH’s ire. I just wanted to commiserate with you and tell you how relatable that is and how, even though that was many years ago for both you and her I pray even now that you find peace and healing, and that you both look forwards to the reunion with your fathers to come.

    God bless,
    SNS

To those who have experienced it, my condolences.
To those who have dealt with it and conquered the grief, my congratulations!
You never forget, but you strike me as having gone thru both, so a toast to you!

“Best Present as an adult, a Kidney (this year).”

Amazing understatement, Anounamis. Praise the Lord you found a donor, that He gifted a surgeon with the skill to perform the operation, began the healing in your body, and may you have many more years on this Earth free of infection or rejection to fulfill your purpose until you are called home at the last, many years from today.

  30. Harry I would use the ear piece and listen at night to Cleveland or someplace far away and all 60’s rock and roll SO COOL! Wish I still had it but don’t think I do even though I have selected things like my nice piggy bank, doll odds and ends. I would walk up and down the road listening and singing as I lived on a country road, and also would take it on my bike, sometimes riding several miles to nearest village but only by back roads. I can’t believe I did that scary to think of now. All by myself usually. Best friend lived one and a half miles away.
