National Security: A Japanese Health Ministry survey released this week found that nearly one out of four citizens has considered suicide, with more women admitting to the impulse than men but higher suicide rates among men than women.
A plurality of those who admitted to considering ending their lives said they changed their mind by focusing on work or “hobbies.”
Kyodo News reports that 23.6 percent of total respondents admitted to considering suicide – 25.6 percent of women and 21.4 percent of men. The highest number of those saying they had considered suicide were in their 50s, a whopping 30.1 percent. Individuals over 70 were least likely to admit to considering suicide at 19.1 percent.
“Asked how they were able to overcome their suicidal thoughts in a multiple-answer question, 36.7 percent said they shifted their focuses to hobbies or work, while 32.1 percent said they confided in family members, friends or co-workers,” Kyodo reported.
Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, as well as one of the highest life expectancy rates and a notoriously low rate of childbirth.
Living overworked on an island of limited resources whilst being subjected to anime, manga, blinding neon, raw fish and Hello Kitty can drive one to the brink, I suppose.
The even have an entire forest dedicated to suicide.

Not 4 out of 4?
Not bad. One out of ten still glow in the dark.
I lived in Japan for a while. The women are treated pretty crappily by their husbands. Not Muzzie crappy, but it’s pretty rough for them. Especially as the Japanese women are exposed to the way the Western world treats their women a lot more equitably (despite what they think). They see themselves as stuck in a bad situation with few ways out.
“Today, about one to two million Japanese are Christians (about one percent of Japan’s population), and churches can be found across the country. Many Christians live in Western Japan where the missionaries’ activities were greatest during the 16th century.”
1% BELIEVE IN CHRIST!! ANY QUESTIONS???
Paging General Curtis Lemay !
Suicide is a perfectly viable [?] option in the Japanese culture. It is the preferred option to disgrace.
Maybe I just run with a depressed crowd. But it seems that everyone I know has thought of it at least once. Maybe not seriously, but it has crossed their minds.
I think about suicide frequently – specifically, how much I’d appreciate it if certain other people were to do themselves in.
Was it Mark Twain who said
I’ve never wished for anyone’s death…But have read many Obituaries with glee”
I was close
“I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.” – Mark Twain
Ever since Sunday, I have seen this quote attributed to Mark Twain. I’m unable to find an original source for it. One person claims it is not Twain at all, but a bastardization of a quote by Clarence Darrow.
“I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” – Clarence Darrow
You’ve never been on a JAL flight during
