People who say magnetic tape has no place in the modern world need to watch these three in action. They haven’t seemed to have put a title to their creation but they sure have stick-to-itiveness. Watch

Wow and flutter?
That’s a lot of creativity going on there and it sounds quite good.
Looks identical to the Akai recorder I used to own.
There was a guy iinn the 60s that repurposed a cassette recorder to have variable speed and play tones – made some very spacey sounds – forget who and what it was, but that is what this reminds me of.
I CHOSE THE WRONG DAY TO STOP SNORTING COKE
The death of magnetic recording tape has been very much exaggerated. I have 2 digital studios that can record in analog (very much prefered by some serious musicians) and then mix to digital masters. Unfortunately I have to import magnetic tape in bulk from Japan at very high expense.
Innovative and creative, good vibe.
I don’t know anything about magnetic tapes but I saw a guy get his thumbs squished paper thin when someone turned on a magnetic chuck at the wrong time. OSHA was not impressed.
Not sure what I just watched…
LTO tape is still in use all over the place. I miss the self-loading IBM 9-tracks with the vacuum columns…
Also… You can still get C-41 process color film developed, not sure about E-6. Sadly, the K-14 process is long gone. They took my Kodachrome away! :'(

I used to make mix tapes for parties by recording songs onto a stereo VCR. Could get 6 hours of uninterrupted music per tape.
Sounded good and you didn’t have to fart around with your stereo all the time.
I could see the Pioneer logo. Those were good quality players back then.
A clever way to use grandpa’s old music box.
Kali Refugee in Texas: I can get E6 through my local photo shop but they have to send it out ($40 for a 120 roll). But at least they can get it done. This shop also does nice scans when they get it back.
E6 chemicals are also available if you want to do it at home. If you are in Houston I can tell you where I go for my film processing.
But regarding the video, is it my imagination or is the tape nowhere near the tape heads?
That’s clever, but if you want to talk tape, this…
“For “I’m Not in Love,” 10cc stumbled upon the initial idea of trying to do the entire song a cappella, as a choir. But since this was long before the digital era of almost infinite multitrack recording and inexpensive loop pedals, 10cc faced a Herculean task to realize the song. The group spent three weeks recording vocal “ahhh” sounds – for as long as they could hold their breath – for each note in the chromatic scale, plus one octave note. They did so 16 times, filling a 16-track reel with three voices, each pass for every note, and then mixed each of those 16 passes down to a single stereo tape. Next, they spliced those into tape loops, around 12-feet in length. Then they repeated all of this for the next note, ending up with 13 loops of dense vocal notes.
Stewart played back each loop by rigging a capstan on a mic stand about 12-feet away from the stereo tape deck. The reason he made the tape loops so long was due to the splice points on the loop making a blip each time they passed, which was something that he wanted to hear as little as possible. Additionally, the loops were staggered so that the edit point passed at different times for each note. Extra weight was added to the two mic stand bases; then they were held by band members in order to manually adjust the tension, by pulling back or leaning forward as the loop played. These looped tracks were then fed back, one-by-one, onto single channels of the 16-track deck using a fresh tape.…”
…is genius. And a great song.

Reely different
Does it have to be rewound when its done?
Thirdtwin: Years ago I was the technical director of a live radio broadcast of Julius Caesar. There were scenes where I needed a long sound of a crowd cheering, but I did not have such a sound effect long enough. I recorded what I had on a piece of reel to reel tape and spliced it into a loop, wrapped it around the reels and over the heads and hit play. Instant crowd whenever I needed it.
