Ted Cruz Apologizes To Ben Carson For Pushing the False “Ben Carson Is Quitting” Rumor

Fox – Speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Cruz apologized on Tuesday. He said their political team had forwarded an initial news report that said Carson was taking a break from the campaign trail, but did not forward an update to that same story.

“Unfortunately, they did not then forward the subsequent story, that was Ben’s campaign clarifying that he was continuing the campaign and was not canceling the campaign,” Cruz said. “And so I apologize to Ben for that. They should have forwarded that subsequent story. That was a mistake on our part.”

On Tuesday morning, Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler also told MSNBC that the campaign simply repeated what Carson had said: that after Iowa, he was returning to Florida for a couple of days, then going to Washington for the National Prayer Breakfast.

“That told us he was not going to New Hampshire,” Tyler said. “That was not a dirty trick.”

!snip!

But, Mr. Tyler, not going to New Hampshire is not quitting the race, is it?

  1. From what little I have read about it (and mind you, I wasn’t there) I tend to think that maybe it was, if not an honest mistake, just a case of jumping to the wrong conclusion rather than a dirty trick. And one of the biggest reasons I think that is because there was no reason for Cruz to play dirty in this case. He had nothing to fear from Carson. Now, if it had been Trump instead of Carson, well…

    😛

  2. Well, it helps Cruz to siphon off Carson votes.

But, I can see getting overzealous and not thinking things through on THE DAY.
There is an excitement level that is pretty insane.
I’ve seen ground games on a local level where people would do things they normally wouldn’t do to win.

What they should have done was call the Carson camp and ask if he was bowing out.
They shouldn’t have taken unclear info and clarified it in a way that fit their narrative – “Don’t Waste Your Vote, Give It To Ted, THE CANDIDATE In It For The Long Haul.”

As if Rubio and Trump aren’t in it for the long haul.

  3. Cruz has an aggressive staff which understands the Axelrod/Emanuel way, and they grasp data mining stuff like Project Narwhal. Watch out, unindicted Dem candidates, this ain’t no Romney bus tour.

  4. Good point about;

“As if Rubio and Trump aren’t in it for the long haul.”

Anyway – I think it was made very clear about Carsons intentions – the press was instantly busting his ass about the trip to “get clean clothes”. Today Carson said he isn’t going to get in the mud over it, but you could tell he really believes it was a deliberate lie.

  5. Cruz will surely lose plenty of votes for that unless he fires Rick Tyler. Does Tyler represent the kind of people Cruz will surround himself with if he becomes President? That’s “so Washington.”
