Teen wanted for deportation accused in San Francisco killing

Federal immigration authorities said Friday that they were tracking a young immigrant when he shot and killed a popular community activist in San Francisco last month, police said.

Erick Garcia-Pineda, 18, was detained in December and released from custody in April pending deportation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said. An immigration judge required him to wear an ankle monitor and routinely check in with ICE.

Garcia-Pineda failed to show up for his August appointment, ICE spokesman James Schwab said.

San Francisco police say Garcia-Pineda used a gun stolen from an officer’s car to kill Abel Ezquivel, 23, on Aug. 15. He was arrested on misdemeanor battery charges Sept. 3 before investigators say they connected him to the slaying.

ICE says the sheriff’s department ignored a request to block his release from jail that day. San Francisco’s “sanctuary city” policy bars the sheriff from cooperating with immigration officials unless they are seeking suspects convicted or charged with violent crimes.

This is the second situation in which an illegal immigrant was accused of killing someone in San Francisco. In July 2015, Kate Steinle was walking with her father on a crowded city pier when Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez opened fire, killing Steinle, police said.

  1. The spokesman for the community center where this “activist” worked was more stunned that it was a cop’s weapon that killed the staffer then the fact that it was an illegal released by SFPD against the advice by ICE to keep him in custody. Now instead of simply being deported for being a thief this piece of trash (when caught, hopefully before he kills anyone else) will be incarcerated at taxpayors expense for years.

The cop that had the gun stolen from his car needs to be terminated. It seems he ignored police policy on storing a gun which stated that if a gun needs to be left in an unattended car for a “brief” period it must be secured in the trunk, out of view. This cop didn’t even know his car had been broken into until after the shooting.

Oh, and the writers of the story, AP described the killer as a “young immigrant” in the first sentence of the story thus confirming just how unbiased the press is.

  2. Daily there are multiple news reports of local crimes committed by Hispanics. They won’t say if they’re illegal or not. One would assume they are not. Had a little Road Rage episode this morning with a tatted up Mex.

  3. Every person who implemented the illegal release policy and every person who followed the illegal policy is guilty of murder.

I won’t hold my breath until they are properly prosecuted and convicted.
