Lt. Gen. Hal Moore died at the age of 94 at his home in Alabama. Most of us know the name from Mel Gibson’s Viet Nam war movie masterpiece, “We Were Soldiers,” which depicted a part of the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965.
Lt. Col. Moore was assigned to Fort Benning to command one of the early air assault units under development at the time. When President Johnson committed American ground forces to Viet Nam, Lt. Col. Moore’s unit was designated as 1st Batalion, Seventh Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Custer’s old unit) and adopted the old Irish song “Garry Owen” as the units marching song and shipped of to Viet Nam.
