The City of Lost Boats

The City

There are at least 600 abandoned boats citywide, according to the Parks Department, which has removed 350 boats and 5,000 cubic yards of marine debris since 2006. Many others linger, or are eventually removed by property owners.

At 520 miles, New York City’s shoreline is longer than those of Miami, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco combined, but the ghost boats tend to be clustered in a handful of locations, including City Island. More

  1. It cost a fortune to demo an old boat from a marina. It’s common practice to motor (or tow) them out to an area not normally navigated and scuttle/burn them and claim the loss! I’ve seen many abandoned watercraft in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta over the years.

  2. DURING MY NAVY CRUISES ACROSS MANY SEAS, WE WOULD OCCASIONALLY COME ACROSS A RATHER NICE BOAT TOSSING ABOUT, THOUSANDS OF MILES FROM ANY LAND, WITH NOBODY ABOARD

A PRETTY SPOOKY SCENE CONSIDERING THE HIGH SEAS AND HOWLING WIND

The places is filthy with them. A couple years ago I was rolling up the San Joaquin at around 80 mph and just missed a slightly submerged cabin cruiser with my prop. Later that day on the way back to the ramp we passed a big yacht that didn’t miss it. Apparently it punched a hole in the yacht right below the water line. The good news is after they sink they provide a good habitat for fish. You can see a ton of old wrecks in the backs of most sloughs.

  4. Yesterday, three teenage boys were rescued in the middle of the night six miles off the coast of Sabine Pass, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. They were in a very small boat whose engine had died and barely managed to make a MAYDAY call before their cell phone went dead. It was pitch dark and very foggy. It was a miracle the Coast Guard found them. They are complete idiots but thank God they are safe.

Dude that place use to have wet tee shirt contest around noon on the week ends during the summer time. If we were fishing a tournament we’d always manage to end up fishing around there at that time.
