The IOTW Debate Liveblog, March 10, 2016

11:01: Trump: The Republican party has a great change to embrace “fantastic, great people” that they’ve never known before.

11:00: Cruz: What an age we live in where three sons of middle class people and a rich man can stand together on the stage.

10:59: Rubio: My parents wanted me to live out my dreams. America is great because our parents did that for all of us.

10:58: Kasich: My campaign has been positive. “I wanted to raise the bar.”

10:52: Kasich: We need to fix Social Security.

10:51: Trump: We need to stop executive orders.

10:50: You can be flexible on ideas, but not principles. -Rubio

10:49: Trump: Super Pacs are disasters.

10:48: Cruz: We must defeat the Washington Cartel.

10:47: I’ve turned down almost $300,000,000 in donations. -Trump

10:45: Rubio: My supporters are what keep me going.

10:44: Trump: I’ve beaten Cruz in 13 contests.

10:43: Cruz: Only Trump and I can be the nominee.

10:42: Trump: I’m going to have the delegates, okay?

10:41: Kasich: “Math doesn’t tell the whole story in politics.”

10:39: Rubio: Every institution in America has been failing us for decades.

10:38: Kasich: People in the United States are worried. “People are uptight.”

10:37: Trump: The press is dishonest.

10:35: Cruz: Washington isn’t listening to the people.

10:34: Trump: Some protesters are “bad dudes,” so sometimes it’s okay to punch them.

10:33: Trump: I haven’t encouraged violence at my rallies.

10:27: Kasich: We need to push back against the Chinese.

10:26: Trump: Putin’s been great for Russia. The Chinese government “butchering their people” was “strong.”

10:24: The Obama Administration “has made the United States a laughingstock.” -Cruz

10:20: Rubio: Yes, the climate is changing because it has always changed. We can’t just pass a law in Washington to change the weather.

10:18: Kasich: America’s allies are asking “What are you doing?”

10:17: “I was against the giving of the money.” -Trump on Iran

10:16: Cruz: Trump called Hillary Clinton a great Sec. of State.

10:15: Trump: “We’re not going to do a deal unless it’s a really good deal.”

10:14: Cruz: Do you want to continue with the foreign policy as Obama? If so, elect Trump.

10:13: Rubio: If Cuba sues us in a court in Miami, they will lose.

10:12: Trump: “I want to do something with Cuba.”

10:11: Trump: I’m “in the middle” of Obama and Republicans towards Cuba.

10:09: Rubio: Cuba needs to change, not the United States.

10:07: Rubio: People need to be held accountable at the VA.

10:05: Trump: Despite my previous answer on not spending money on the military to save Social Security, we have “no choice” but to send thousands to the Middle East.

10:04: Kasich: Military generals believe that I am the best to be Commander and Chief.

10:03: Cruz: “We must do anything necessary to utterly defeat ISIS.”

10:02: Kasich: Thank goodness we helped Israel with the Iron Dome.

10:01: Trump: I’m going to be neutral on Israel, but we must back them no matter what.

10:00: Rubio: Trump’s neutrality on Israel is an anti-Israel policy.

9:59: Cruz: Trump simply does not understand foreign policy with Israel.

9:57: Trump: There’s nobody on the stage who’s more pro-Israel on this stage. But I’m going to be neutral to them.

9:55: Cruz: You “can’t just yell, ‘China bad, Muslims bad.'”

9:54: Rubio: Under my administration, we need to expand our military and our intelligence agencies.

9:53: Trump: Muslims chant “Death to the USA. That doesn’t sound too friendly.”

9:51: Kasich: Muslims don’t hate us. “There is a sect” of Islam that has a problem, but not all Muslims.

9:50: Rubio: I’m not interested in being politically correct. I’m interested in being correct.

9:49: Trump: There have been consequences: 9/11. Rubio needs to stop being so politically correct.

9:48: Rubio: Presidents can’t just say whatever they want. There are consequences.

9:47: Trump: A lot of Muslims hate us.

9:42: Trump: We’ll build factories if China doesn’t play fair with us.

9:41: Cruz: Ask yourself how a 45% tax on your goods would help you.

9:40: Trump: My 45% tariff “is a threat.”

9:39: Cruz: “I don’t know where” Trump will be tonight on tariffs.

9:38: Trump: The US should be more protectionist.

9:37: Trump: The Republican party should be more inclusive. “Something’s happening.”

9:35: Kasich: I’ve taken on Washington and won.

9:34: Trump: “Ted was in favor of amnesty.”

9:34: Cruz: I’ve taken on Washington. Trump never has.

9:33: Trump: Cruz is a flip-flopper. “Everybody knows.”

9:30: Cruz: Anyone who says they’ll do nothing to Social Security “is not a real leader.”

9:29: Trump: We need to get rid of lobbyists.

9:28: Rubio: The numbers don’t add up. We need to do more.

9:26: Trump: We need to stop helping nations like Israel, South Korea to pay for Social Security.

9:25: Trump: I’m doing nothing with Social Security, just like the democrats.

9:22: Rubio: I am against any changes for Social Security that would hurt my mother.

9:21: Cruz: Common Core must be repealed and I’ll tell the Department of Education to do just that.

9:19: Kasich: What I’m in favor of in Ohio is high standards.

9:17: Trump: We can’t have education through Washington, DC. Also, Ben Carson is endorsing me.

9:16: Rubio: “Nothing looks like it did 60 years ago.” We need to change things.

9:15: Cruz: We need to finish the wall and man it.

9:13: Trump: I abuse the H1-Bs, but the government shouldn’t allow me to. “H1B, I use it, I shouldn’t be allowed to use it, it’s very bad for our workers.”

9:12: Kasich: “I believe in immigration, but it needs to be controlled.” Otherwise I might still be “in Croatia.”

9:09: Rubio: If a company is caught abusing the H-1B visa program, they should never be able to use it again.

9:07: Cruz: “We are getting killed” in international trade.

9:06: Rubio: We need to have access to the hundreds of millions of people in other countries that can afford US goods.

9:05: Trump: I will run the United States different than my businesses.

9:03: Kasich: One out of five Americans work in a job connected to trade. We need free and fair trade.

9:02: Trump: “Millions and millions of people are voting out of enthusiasm and love.” We’re taking people from the democrats.

9:01: Cruz: Florida welcomed my father. This election is about “you and your children” and the freedom that American always has.

9:00: Rubio: This is the most important election in a generation because we must decide where we are headed as a nation.

8:59: Kasich: I look in the faces of people all across this nation and people want to be hopeful.

8:55: 25 minutes late, CNN starts to introduce the candidates.

8:32: Looks like CNN lied again. Looks like it’s starting at 9, not 8:30 as they repeatedly reported.

Welcome to the IOTW Report liveblog. The debate is scheduled to start at 8:30. I expect not just fireworks, but a bloodbath. Ignore what Reince Priebus said about the debate being “G-rated;” this is going to get nasty.

166 Comments on The IOTW Debate Liveblog, March 10, 2016

  1. Who do you think Trump could shoot tonight and still win the debate and the nomination?

    Wolf Blitzer – You’re fired! (9mm)

A target with both Hillary and Bernie? (shotgun)

    Obama you’re fired! (flame thrower?)

  2. I had a talk with Trump today. I asked him if he saw my blog post that said that he had to ramp it down, talk calmly, presidentially.

He said he saw the post and he would take the advice.

    So far so good.

  3. “had a talk with Trump today. I asked him if he saw my blog post that said that he had to ramp it down, talk calmly, presidentially.”

I linked that thread on his FB page. Along with my own similar message. He’s doing pretty good tonight, but then again from what Ive seen he’s not a Cuban sandwich tonight.

  4. I think Trump scored big when he talked about “you’re going to see a very different America,” in context with how we are the unpaid world’s policeman who PAYS OUT money to countries all over the world.

I think Trump is serious about changing this business of America into a thriving business.

The others are sounding like what I’ve been hearing for 35 years.
    I’m sick of it.
    I want DIFFERENT.
    We need different.

  5. Cruz flummoxed on ethanol… needed to pause a moment to regroup into damage control.
He reflexively went into oily mode and didn’t answer the question, just filibustered until he was satisfied he was ending on an applause line for the lofos.

  6. I’m hoping everyone listened to that last exchange. Cruz Tarrif Tarrif, your Walmart prices will go up 45%. Trump, no we will build it here. Slam dunk, Teddy has no clue. That’s why I’m voting Trump. He gets it. Cruz is just another attorney.

  7. Yep, people are too damn dumb to understand Smoot-Hawley was what pushed a market downturn into the Great Depression. What dumbass can’t understand tariff;s are a tax on the buyer, not the seller? China will continue to sell iphones and ipads around the world but the ones sold in the USA will cost 45% more. BTW, tariffs are imposed by acts of congress not presidential fiat.

  8. And there it is.
    Rubio said it.

Trump’s appeal is that he says what people would like to say, but they can’t.
This is why we don’t want politicians that guard their words to OUR DETRIMENT.

  9. Really, Trump is an economic genius.

“Trump, no we will build it here. Slam dunk”

So what happens when the Chinese company builds that plant in Mexico and sends the goods in from there with no 45% tariff ? Oh I see we tariff Mexico. And then what happens when it’s Nicaragua, Honduras, etc.. Each one a 45% tariff?

    Really, you are easily impressed.

  10. Ohio Dan, I’ll forgo my IPhone or IPad to put American workers back to work again. The hell with that Chinesed own company. Oh wait. That’s some sticken thicken going on there dude. As bad as our economy is we are still the idiots running around with the credit cards over extending our selves. Another thought, who right all those damn cell phone apps? We do.

  11. What dumbass can’t understand tariff;s are a tax on the buyer, not the seller?
    >>>

What dumbass doesn’t understand that you cannot allow one country to dump their products all over the world and not allow the rest of the world’s products into their country?

  12. So what happens when the Chinese company builds that plant in Mexico and sends the goods in from there with no 45% tariff ? Oh I see we tariff Mexico. And then what happens when it’s Nicaragua, Honduras, etc.. Each one a 45% tariff?

I think that’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Like we wouldn’t know. Trump cutting Mexico off too so I’m not sure that will do China much good.

  13. Listen to the other dumbasses now.

They are ticking off virtually every Islamic state and saying they are a danger, they cannot be dealt with, they are rogue etc.

Trump says Islam hates us and they wet themselves.

  14. Cruz just said that some nations HATE US.

    Is that presidential and responsible???
Let’s have the Chinese fire drill now.
Cruz said some nations HATE US!

My God. He is now UNELECTABLE!

  15. Cruz, Rubio and Kasich all have a fatal case of dhimmitude.

Trump can’t say Islam hates us, but Cruz can say there are nations that hate us.

Why this double standard for Islam?

Does EVERY PERSON in that nation hate us?

  16. Sorry but Trump actually does recite a bunch of LOFO shit.
It’s like I have to check 67 IQ points at the door.

Wayne Brady is in danger of losing his ‘Let’s Make A Deal’ hosting gig if Trump isn’t elected.

Hopefully Trump will be all action, not words…

  17. What the Cruz supporters (supporters over all else) ((I consider myself a guy willing to support Cruz at all costs if Cruz wins the nomination)) don’t realize is that he is not a charismatic, visually appealing guy.

I know we stand for principles that transcend that sort of shallowness, but it is a factor.

Cruz, dare I say it, is a little…

  18. Somebody posted earlier that before the debate started that Trump would have 64% (If I remember correctly) of the votes for winning the debate on Drudge. The prognosticator wasn’t far off – Trump has 60% (50,000+ votes) as I type. If he is elected president, one can only hope that the rest of the world is as enamored of him (or intimidated by him) and his policies (whatever they are by then) before they are even implemented.

  19. Cruz is mesmerized by his reflection in the monitors tonight.
Rubio is given some solid conservative responses – too bad he’s a flaky senator.
Kasich is all over the place.

  20. Maybe I missed since I am watching on line and dealing with buffering issues, but in a world where Mike Brown is celebrated for getting killed, I never heard a single word about LaVoy Finicum.

    What’t up with that?

    #RanchersLivesMatter

  21. Wow!
Tonight iotwreport is sponsored by Trump Industries.
    Lot of Trump love tonight.
Why isn’t Chuck Wollery hosting instead of Aurelius?

To me, Trump is Quint from Jaws.
I don’t want to hire him but I may have to.

“I’ll find him for three trillion…but I’ll catch him, and kill him for ten!”

Perhaps it will end with Trump and the DC shark taking each other out?

    Fine with me.

  22. I remember when Palin was still liked by the right, and her daughter was pregnant out of wedlock, and when she offered her advice on how to not stand in her shoes, most of the right defended her when the left pointed and laughed.

“What a hypocrite dumbbell hillbilly,” the left said.

“Who better than the sinner to warn of the sin?” said the right.

Now when Trump says he knows how to fix what is wrong because he exploited it as a business man there are many on the right pointing and laughing and calling him a hypocrite and a dumbbell New Yorker.”

    I hate tribalism.

  23. Why the Trump love??

Well, frankly I am getting a little sick of the right joining the left in calling Trump a racist, using the same thin standard that the left uses on the rest of us the rest of the time.

To watch these shitstains using the left’s standard to call him a racist in order to help their favored candidate get a win, when they know that Cruz will be called a racist by the left in the general, is despicable.

  24. Oh Man, BigFurHat. Honestly that’s not tribalism, it’s unadulterated ignorance. Nothing worse than people that have never accomplished shit critiquing somebody that has. That is reality.

  25. Plane Jane, I think our guy towered above tonight. Some opportune time I will send you my experience with a strategic supply chain. Very much appreciated your story. So few people understand what it takes to create wealth/income in this country anymore. Donald J knows. So do you and I.

  26. Will I take full credit for the glowing reviews Trump is getting after this debate, being presidential, playing small ball, being more inviting and getting more intimate with the viewers?

    Yes. Yes I will.

  27. @ charliewalksonwater

It happens to me all the time. It quit on Mr. Plain Jane in the middle of the debate while he watched on ROKU. They asked for money. 🙂 He started it over again and saw the rest of the debate.

I’m not too sure if I am the attractive one. I haven’t sung “I Feel Pretty” since my daughter learned it on the piano 3.5 decades ago. 🙂

  28. That was a much better debate. I got to listen to the candidates. Now if they would leave the audience out of the room The yay my guy and boo your guy racket from the audience distracts from what is being said.

  29. BFH, at first I thought you were spoofing us. But now I just want to say thank you. He needed to show that side of himself tonight. It’s the side he shows during one on one interviews and he’s downright great then and was tonight.

  30. Trump won the debate tonight. For the first time in my life, I was proud of Trump. He was able to confuse Cruz by being nice…Cruz was unable to deal with that unanticipated change.

No, I am not changing positions, because I do not believe for a second that Trump can be that guy for more than two hours. I dare him to prove me wrong!

If Trump had spent the last 8 months acting like he did tonight, I’d put a Trump magnet on the back of my truck….

Now I’m mad at Menderwoman for those bags of Snickers!

Who believes Trump can be this way past tonight?

    Not me.

  31. @Bad_Brad,

“I think that’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Like we wouldn’t know. Trump cutting Mexico off too so I’m not sure that will do China much good.”

You suggest you know something about supply chains, but yet a comment showing how China could circumvent any Trump tariff is lost on you and you claim it is the dumbest thing you have ever read. Now I understand how and why you love Trump. Just curious if ever Trump follower will remain quiet and non-complaining when prices of most goods are beyond their means to obtain them.

Of course the tariffs are just “poison pills” because Trump is playing 3 dimensional chess. Of course I thought “poison pills” were fiction and he really meant that he was backed the tariffs since he said he does in interviews.

Funny how Trump’s obvious ignorance is a strength and his use of tactics are legitimate, but not so for any other candidate.

    ‘nough said….

P.S. The comments sure read like a lot of people trying to reassure themselves that Trump is really a good candidate.
Let’s pray he really is a good candidate if he ends up being the nominee and this wasn’t just a circle with a jerk.

  32. Woody, here’s where you have your head up your ass so far you need to unzip your zipper to see where you are going. Name one single piece of technology China has come up with on their own. You can’t dumb shit. They steal all their tech. Primarily from us. That stops with a Trump administration. Who are the consumers of the world? To this day, it’s still us. Maybe not for long. And yes I’ve surfed the Dynamic Supply Chain to great success until politicians that guys like you would vote for killed it. I’ve asked you several times what you actually do in Texas to put food on the table. No answer. Got to be a State or Fed job. You sir are a closet lib.

  33. Two true statements I heard tonight when I checked in after the debate:

    I. Ted Cruz: Everyone is weary of the tone of these debates.

    2. Donald Trump: Islam hates us, and we have to get to the bottom of it.

And thank you Aurelius for the breakdown.

  34. Reddits Sanders4President are sabotaging the polls in favor for Cruz according to one commenter on another site. Rent a mob isn’t enough to try to undo Trump rallies. This sure is an enthusiastic election cycle.

  35. @Bad_Brad,

I think I will save this one for the next time you whine about never being insulting anyone and only having discussions.

“Woody, here’s where you have your head up your ass so far you need to unzip your zipper to see where you are going.

So that’s myth one of yours blown up, on to myth 2.

Gee, name tech that China has come up with, wow what a genius question there boy, you sure do have me. Gosh, I guess you are the smartest guy in the room.

Off the top of my head, they have had success inventing new maglev generators used in turbines and a carbon aerogel. Just two I know of from projects I have been involved in.

But that’s not the problem oh genius one, the problem is that for instance, Apple. Apple builds all their tech in China and those factories will not be relocating to the United States and I don’t care how much Trump stomps his feet or decides to increase tariffs. It just won’t happen. Instead you or others who buy IPhones will be paying more. You will also be paying more for just about any tech since most of the components are made in southeast Asia.

Some of those corporations will work to limit the impact of the tariff by adjusting their manufacturing and assembly to countries not affected by Trump’s tariffs, but in the end his tariffs will have little affect unless he decides to chase them around the world implementing tariffs on practically every other country.

As for what I do, I have no reason to explain because it matters not to the conversation.

As for being a closet liberal, that one makes me laugh every time you through it around because nobody who knows me would buy it and you sir have no basis in fact to use it other than as another insult, which as you have told us all you never do around here.

  36. 11:00: Cruz: What an age we live in where three sons of middle class people and a rich man can stand together on the stage.

Going through that eye of the needle is really tough Teddy. Your jealousy is showing every time you open your mouth about Trump. You keep speaking in tongues, you make no sense.

  37. Bad_Brad,

You do know you comment about it all being BS is actually BS in itself and you are speaking about things for which you have absolutely no idea or experience.

Believe it or not, matters not, but it just happens that some companies have R&D in China and the folks doing the work are Chinese and if you read what I wrote I was not speaking of vertical axis wind turbines.

But hey, I am sure you are an expert on it and Trump is as well and you guys are just pure economic genius and it will all work out just like it has every time it has been tried.

So what’s next for Trump after tariffs, maybe some wage and price controls perhaps. This is sounding less like a “Nixon Shock” approach and more like Smoot-Hawley. Neither of which was very good for the people as one led to the devaluation of the dollar and leaving the gold standard and the other led to tariff war and possibly contributed to the Great Depression.

But hey I am sure Trump knows what he is doing and it will all work out this time.

  38. Woody; these things have always failed, not because they are bad ideas, but because they were implemented by the wrong people.
Trump WILL get that square peg in that round hole without breaking anything.
You just need more faith and a willingness to believe in the impossible.
Tariffs have worked very well in Venezuela the products made in country are so good that people stand in line, sometimes for days to get them.
