The kissing couple were perfect strangers. The woman was Greta Friedman, a dental assistant wearing a nurse’s uniform.
“It was the moment,” Mendonsa told CBS News in 2012. “You come back from the Pacific and finally, the war ends.
“The excitement of the war being over, plus I had a few drinks. So when I saw the nurse, I grabbed her and I kissed her.”
Friedman died in 2016, at the age of 92.

I met The Nurse at a parade in DC, years ago, (she passed away not long ago).
Sarasota, FL has a giant statue of the two by the downtown waterfront. Worth googling and a nice backstory to the statue.

I never knew that there were 2 shots from different angles of the “Victory” kiss. In both pictures you can see the same sailor in his whites. He’s smiling, not smirking. You can also see 2 women (1 old and 1 younger) who are also smiling.
Next up: Proof of toxic male masculinity and rape of Mother Gaia in photo showing Marines “forcibly inserting” flag pole while on Iwo Jima.
The young woman in the background was actually his date, and they ended up getting married.
It makes one wonder what this “great” generation of toxic masculinity were doing to the women of Germany and Japan.

There’s a giant statue of them by the Midway in San Diego, too. The left will never allow us a moment of celebration–of victory–like this again. May they both RIP. It’s a great photo of a great moment.
