The mystery disappearance of a puppy has been solved

upi-

Bonnie Ziegler, who is fostering the puppy, named Latte, and her three siblings for Foothills Animal Rescue, said the canine vanished during a bathroom break in her yard.

“I didn’t hear a sound and the other puppies didn’t bark. It was as if she just vanished,” Ziegler told KPHO/KTVK. “We immediately started searching and soon our neighbors joined in. We posted a notice on the Nextdoor [app] in the hopes someone might find her.”

Latte turned up about 12 hours later at the Troon Country Club, suffering from dehydration and puncture wounds.

So what happened?

  1. I have done a few jobs here in the Dallas area where the squirrels went nocturnal and were up all night. I thought it was rat activity at first but got proof on my trail cam I was after squirrels .

It was a huge WTF for me as I hadn’t seen squirrels being nocturnal before in 30 years of trapping them.

Then I got my answer from a pic the customer sent me as I was driving over to pick up a caught squirrel.

There were no leaves on most trees as it was late Winter. Squirrels aren’t that stupid.

Back in the 90s a neighbor of a customer had every Koi snapped up from his brand new Koi pond. Hawks are awesome.

  2. My daughter and I were walking our dog up by the duck pond at Manito park on Spokane’s S. hill a few years ago when we saw a small hawk catch a catfish in the pond and was promptly attacked by another hawk causing the first hawk to drop the catfish onto the ground right in front of us. It happened in an instant and was actually quite funny, I then picked the wounded catfish up before my dog could get to it and threw it back into the pond.

  3. I dunno about the owl theory. I have a small dachshund, but he still weighs 9lbs.

A great horned owl weighs barely 4lbs. a hawk weighs less than an owl.

That dog looks bigger than my small dachshund.

So now I’m supposed to believe that owls and hawks are capable of carrying 2-3 times their weight?

  4. I know for a fact, seen it with my own eyes more than once, hawks carrying off animals 2 to 3 times their own size, one that was more than 3 times their size.

Have also seen them causing some pretty bad injuries to animals that they should have known they couldn’t pick up as well in attempt to grab them.

  5. Somehow I think the $4500 Vet bill could be the actual point of this story. What the heck? That puppy doesn’t look big enough for that amount. What a day!

  6. Out where I live you watch your small pets when they are out at night. Owls have taken cats and small dogs. Even if they can’t carry it away they can kill it and take chunks. Never underestimate what a predator can do. We also have coyotes prowling around.

  7. was walking my 22 pound australian terrier one night here in AZ where those dam Great Horned owls are the size of piper cubs. One did a stuka on my dog while he was on the leash 8 foot in front of me. It broke off the dive at about 8 foot above my dog and 12 foot in front of me and it wasnt one of the bigger owls i’ve seen.

  8. There’s a product called ‘Raptor Shield’ that’s affordable and easy to use. The dog doesn’t mind it. My rat terrier is probably 20 lbs now so I thinks she’s safe without it. She’s always outside with my heeler, plus if some raptor gets her they will soon find out why they call them Terriors….nasty little bitch sometimes….

  9. Yes, Claudia. That part of town has a lot of undeveloped fields still. Lots of hawks to see every day.

I was driving home on a country county road one Saturday night and the hugest owl I had ever seen swooped past me as I was driving and alighted on the shoulder of the road ahead of me, turned it’s face towards me and watched me drive by.

It was as tall as the hood on my Dakota. 3 ft plus

Huge owls exist. I’m quite sure that one could handle animals much larger than chihuahuas. This one was about 20 miles north of Dallas about 150 yards off I-75

  10. I worry about my dog all the time when he goes out. I’ve seen a Great Horned in a tree near my house, looked like Batman sitting up there. At least two feet tall. Also got photos of a red-tailed hawk not 50 feet from the house. Stewie goes out with an armed guard. Might look into that Raptor Shield…
