ScoopDeck: ABOARD THE LITTORAL COMBAT SHIP MILWAUKEE, VIRGINIA CAPES – The littoral combat ship Milwaukee, the Navy’s newest ship, broke down Dec. 11 and had to be towed more than 40 nautical miles to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia.

The ship suffered an engineering casualty while transiting from Halifax, Canada, to Mayport, Florida, and ultimately its home port of San Diego. The cause is being evaluated by ship’s crew and technical consultants.

Initial indications are that fine metal debris collected in the lube oil filter caused the system to shut down, according to a Navy statement provided to Navy Times. The cause of the metal debris in the lube oil system is not known and assessments are ongoing.

The ship was commissioned Nov. 21 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has been making the long trek to San Diego through the Great Lakes since.  read more

  1. with ships in the two classes of LCS named after Gabby Giffords and Detroit (no, I’m not kidding) plus that Aluminium hull, not incorporating the Aegis anti ship missile defenses… I’d rather be on a Nimitz Class CVN any day.

Not a Navy guy, but I saw the C-RAM adaptation of the Navy’s CIWS system and developed an appreciation for the protection umbrella that Aegis provides

For those unfamiliar, the C-RAM (Counter-Rocket Artillery and Mortar) uses a gun similar to the one on the A-10 to shoot down inbound threats to ground troops

  2. There are two ‘types’ of LCS. The even numbers are built to a design created by General Dynamics, which has several ship-building divisions. The odd numbered types are designed by Lockheed-Martin, who primarily build airplanes. Word going around is don’t hire a plane-builder to make a warship.
