The former Yugoslavian state of Macedonia held a referendum this last weekend to rename itself “North Macedonia.” The move is an attempt to satisfy neighboring Greece that the Macedonians to their north won’t attempt to claim the Greek providence of the same name. With the change, the Macedonians expect the Greeks to stop blocking their attempt to join NATO and the EU.
While the Macedonian government was able to claim a decisive affirmation of the change, with a 94 percent voting yes, turnout was less that overwhelming with only 37 percent showing up to cast their ballot. This turned the measure from a binding agreement with the voters to a mere consultative measure to the nation’s parliament. More
How about “New Macedonia”?
It worked for New Mexico.
How about Apatheticstan?
How about Fat Happy Peasant Voman Babushka Land
How about, “If you try to join the EU, you’re out of NATO, until you’ve been nuked, at least once.”?
