NYP: When the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 on Oct. 27, 2004, giving them the World Series, the entire city of Boston felt like a weight had been lifted.
It had been 86 years since the Sox last Series win, in 1918, and no matter the confluence of circumstances that combine to make a team a winner or loser, many over the years blamed the drought on the Curse of the Bambino.
Throughout the 1910s, the Boston Red Sox were a superior ball club, winning four World Series, while the New York Yankees had yet to make the championship, much less win one. more
THIS DUDE KNEW HOW TO LIVE!! BOOZE, BROTHELS, BABES, AND BRAWLS!!
Actually Jimmy Buffett lifted the curse.
He gave a concert on September 10th/12th 2004 at Fenway.
Jimmy did a skit* to remover the curse and it worked!
Yaaa!
How else could you explain that amazing comeback against the damn Yankees?
( *Recorded on the Live At Fenway Park double CD ).
Isn’t that the definition of insanity? 86 years? Sounds insane to me.
They couldn’t afford his hot dog bill!
No one has ever had more impact on a sport as a player than the Babe did baseball. He truly changed the way the game was played. He still holds the record for career slugging percentage at .6897. Even with all the steroids, Barry Bonds is way behind him at .6069 (with old sluggers like Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig besting him as well).
as the Babe would probably say, “What a bunch of malarkey!”
I always bought in to the “No No Nanette” theory. This story makes much more sense, especially with the Babe’s lifestyle choices.
With no social media or cameras everywhere, I’m sure the Boston press treated him with kid gloves.
86 years of “Who’s on first?”
@Moxie ~ actually the musical ‘My Lady Friend’ was financed from the proceeds from the Ruth sale … ‘No No Nanette’ was a musical based on ‘My Lady Friend’ that came out about 5 years later
the Bambino was the greatest baseball player …. EVER!
It would be interesting to see how he would be with modern training and nutrition.
The thing is, his style added to his greatness.
Nowadays you never know who is drugging.
Those assholes Armstrong and Bonds are among those that ruined everything.
Wow, with the History Channel switching to reality shows, iOTWReport is my new favorite blog. How about some of those Conspiracy programs that used to be on H2? Ancient Aliens or Modern Marvels.
