There Seems to be an “Autism” Problem in MN’s Somali Community

Minnesota Star Tribune

Gov. Tim Walz called Thursday for Minnesota to increase criminal penalties for Medicaid fraud in response to the FBI’s investigation into autism service providers.

The FBI searched at least two Minnesota autism centers Thursday as it investigated “substantial evidence” of fraudulent Medicaid claims made by many companies participating in the state program. The state-funded Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI) program, which serves people under 21 with autism spectrum disorder, has experienced exponential growth in Medicaid billing. Reimbursement claims soared from $1.7 million in 2017, the first year of the program, to nearly $400 million last year and again this year.

Federal law enforcement suspects many autism centers are billing for services not actually provided.

“This pisses me off unlike anything else,” Walz told the Star Tribune in an interview Thursday afternoon. “They’re stealing from us … You’ve got to increase the penalty on these crimes. These are crimes against children, in my opinion.” More

The funny thing about all this, it seems Autism has been running rampant within the Somali community of Minnesota in recent years. For example, one of the named centers that was raided, Smart Therapy, is identified as being operated by members of the Somali community. It also seems the state overseers for the federal program have been turning a blind eye to the rapid on set of Autism within the Somali community.

This quote says it all

Growth of spending on the Minnesota autism program has exploded in recent years. The number of providers — who are supposed to diagnose and treat people with autism spectrum disorder — has increased 700% in the past five years, climbing from 41 providers in 2018 to 328 last year.

The amount paid to providers during that time has increased 3,000%, from about $6 million to nearly $192 million — according to data provided to the Reformer by the Department of Human Services, which administers the state’s Medicaid program for low-income people and Minnesotans with disabilities.

  1. “This pisses me off unlike anything else,” Walz told the Star Tribune in an interview Thursday afternoon. “They’re stealing from us … You’ve got to increase the penalty on these crimes…”

This from the idiot who wants to lessen the penalty for other crimes. It just goes to show these dbags know their moves wioll lead to more crime.

  2. 2 raided out of 328. I’d say the FBI is merely scratching the surface here.

The part that sets me off is the quote from the state official saying they suspected nothing because the rapid on set of Autism among the Somalis grew at the same rate as the use of all the other government programs supporting their community. Has anyone in Minnesota government considered how many other federal programs they’ve been defrauding if all these programs grew at the same rate as the program that appears to be is chocked full of fraud.

The average taxpayer is treated like an easy mark by government, and we all go further on the hook for a share of the federal deficit.

  3. How far we’ve fallen. When a nephew went thru the process to marry an accomplished young lady from Mexico, working on her master’s in accounting, older brother had to sign his life away guaranteeing she’d never be a drain on American taxpayers.
