14 Comments on This Cop Has Been Fired- The Kid’s Parents Are Suing
Wow, there’s not one damn thing that smells right about this story. Innocent people don’t try and evade cops. I cringed every time that cop fired his weapon with no regard to what was behind his victim.
There was no threat to that cops life. At the very minimum an over reaction. Realistically it just looked like he wanted to shoot someone.
I’m interested in what Rich has to say.

After a (to me) inexplicable delay, the cop was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault (two counts because there was another person in the car). Assault doesn’t cut it, that should be attempted murder.
I agree with you, @Brad: “Basically it just looked like he wanted to shoot someone.”

What’s with sneaking up to a car and abruptly ripping the door open? Maybe the kid couldn’t see he was a cop in the instant he decided to drive away.
Meanwhile, cops all over let antifa and blm thugs get away with serious crimes in their cars all the time.

I read somewhere else that he obviously mis-identified this car as one that had evaded him the day before. He didn’t take the time to correctly ID the vehicle prior to pulling his firearm on it?

I can’t tell you how insulting it is to see a no-talent hack like Ben Crumb get rich over police misconduct.
From start to finish, everything the cop did was wrong. Recognizing the car from a previous encounter, he knows that the driver has a propensity to rabbit, why not call another unit (or 2) to box him in before the approach? Or, since all it was was “evading”, why not just say,”I’ll catch you next time” and go about your business? Nope, ego demands that we can’t let this one go.
The only justification I could even remotely see for using deadly force was that he was in fear for his life as the car was backing into him, but this is a real stretch because the first shot (and all the others) was fired when the car was away from him and not a threat.
But what is going to send him to prison and cost the city millions is that he continued to fire as the car was speeding away.
Use of deadly force is only authorized at a vehicle if there is an imminent threat to life or clear articulable evidence at hand that the fleeing car will commit a deadly act like it is speeding towards a crowd of people. I did not see either in this case.

Carrying a gun comes with a moral responsibility. Once that bullet leaves the pipe there’s no pulling it back. A lot to be considered. In a split second. Un like Alec believes, you press that trigger you own the outcome. Some of my gun buddies get pissed when I say this, but some people, this day and age, should not be allowed near a gun. That cops one of them. Ultimately, he will effect my ability to carry a gun. Is it a jungle out there? Nope. It’s a shooting gallery. And if you don’t have your shit together, don’t play the game.

Cop interrupted a kid’s Happy Meal. And ruined his date night. (Girl was in the car with him)

The entire thing is flabbergasting and makes no sense. Brennand also was previously military so that should have tempered yahoo behavior with a firearm.

He belongs on the rubber gun squad. Now he’s fired and will end up somewhere else where he can shoot people.
My old C&P supervisor, Tom, was an armed security dude at one point in his career. He did a class on skills and conduct and had one particularly troubling classmate who only asked questions about when he could shoot people and dogs. Tom and a few others brought this up to their supervisors and the lunatic who wanted to shoot everything was shitcanned. Who knows where the lunatic landed his next job.

The scary part of this whole story is that there are thousands of cops just like this one all over the US.

^^^ they end up at the FBI or IRS.

He probably thought he was being car jacked

Was the officer a DEI hire?
It used to be legal to shoot fleeing suspects. “Stop! or I’ll shoot!” used to be a cliche. Heck, in “It’s a Wonderful Life” the cop (Bert or Ernie) shoots three or four times at an unarmed George Bailey running down a busy street in Pottersville. When cops could shoot at fleeing suspects, suspects stopped trying to run away.
