Tree Huggers Sound The Extinction Alarm For Maple Species

Ecologist

More than one in five species of maple trees, whose rich colours are one of the striking sights of autumn, are at high risk of extinction, experts warn.

The latest “Red List” for maples or Acers, published by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), reveals that 36 out of the 158 species, some 23 percent, are at high risk of extinction in the near future in the wild.

It shows that more than a third of maple species are facing a loss of habitat as a result of urban development and increased agriculture, while timber harvesting is also a major threat. More

Later in the article you get these facts:

China is home to the largest proportion of maple species, with 92 species.

Some 14 of the 23 Acers that are at risk of extinction in China are only found in the country, with limited geographical ranges, small populations, and the threat of urban sprawl.

So, unless this report is in Chinese, why bother? Enjoy the fall colors, guilt free, everyone. – Dr. Tar

  1. More bullshit. WHY would the trees in CHINA…NOT be dying since they, the CCP, have no sense of conservation of the environment.

We have a thriving red maple on the front lawn, maybe 90 years old and in the back we have the THRIVING yellow sugars that grow like weeds…over time of course.

And the birds have not seem to notice…they actually love the cover the trees provide.

  3. What would ‘Treebeard the Ent’ say about this? He is ancient with Wisdom.

Personally, I AM a tree hugger. IOW, I like forests and hiking through them, listening and LEARNING.

The left has NO monopoly on this, nature and conservation, and always remember that!!

  4. I live on the edge of the largest “wood basket” in the US.
There is no finer sound on a cool crisp morning than the singing saw blade of a log slasher, making large trees into smaller lengths that go to mills to make thousands of products this country relies on, producing thousands of jobs in the process.
You could call me a “tree hugger” too.
When I see a tall, straight, large diameter (racisim alert) White Pine, I can only imagine what can be made from this gift of nature.
