Federalist: President Trump just signed an Executive Order requiring colleges and universities to uphold free speech or risk losing federal research and education grants.
“Universities that want taxpayer dollars should promote free speech, not silence free speech,” President Trump said at the White House on Thursday. “People who are confident in their beliefs should not censor others.”
The order lays out the administration’s policy of creating environments that, “promote open, intellectually engaging, and diverse debate.” It states that the 12 executive agencies that give money to colleges will take the appropriate steps to, “ensure institutions that receive Federal research or education grants promote free inquiry, including through compliance with all applicable Federal laws, regulations, and policies.”
The order does not effect any forms of financial aid such as student loans or grants, a significant source of federal funding for universities.
However, there are no specifics given as to what steps these agencies will take to ensure compliance. Considering that free speech on college campuses is already protected by the First Amendment, it’s unlikely that universities will face any immediate impact from the E.O. more here
That a president would have to do that in the first place shows how bad things have gotten.
CAN’T WAIT to see them try to spin this as totalitarian.
“People who are confident in their beliefs should not censor others.” Fantastic statement that is pretty hard to argue against.
Also from the link: President Trump also addressed the growing student debt crisis, and called for more transparency when it comes to the cost and outcomes of attending college.”
And the Left tried to smear POTUS Trump with fraud over his “Trump University”. Looks like he’s about to address the real fraud in higher education.
The Left demands government control of ‘free speech’. Let’s see how they like it when the government responds to their false control.
O’bama orders men into women’s and little girl’s locker rooms
Trump orders free speech.
Ok, pick the one enforcing the Constitution of the United States.
I’m wanting to see how this translates into practices on campus.
My guess is that (probably) most of them will try anything and everything, including legal actions, to avoid it.
Progressives believe that the rights and policies of public institutions trump the Constitution. They don’t want to be bound by the rule of law, nor do they feel compelled to obey it.
Expect colleges to respond with “NON-free speech ‘sanctuaries.'” 🙄
All Trump is doing is enforcing the Tinker case from 1965 where the SCOTUS ruled that students’ first amendment rights do not end when they enter the school.
Besides, most colleges take federal money. Obeying the Constitution should be one of the strings attached.
Cultural marxism seeks to control speech and actions. People have been cucked into compliance for decades until now we are on the brink of complete tyranny. It’s time to put on that MAGA hat and confront socialism and all the bullshit that they’re trying to foist on us. Damn what other people think. Speak the truth and the truth will protect you.
OK. GREAT. Now ENFORCE it Very Enthusiastically.
The democrats are loaded with surprises. The biggest surprise for them with be Trump’s re-relection to a second term as our President.
Hate speech is NOT free speech. Learn your Constitution people.
This will work about as well as the with-holding money for sanctuary states and cities.
Gee Larry I don’t see “hate speech” defined in the Constitution and/ or who gets to define “hate speech”. Learn your Constitution. (said with as much sarcasm as I can muster)
Article [I] (Amendment 1 – Freedom of expression and religion) 13
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I’m with beachmom. (I used to live on the beach, too.) And was going to write something serious like she did, but now, I don’t have to! That’s the beauty of this place.
Lessons on the Constitution from a Prog, that’s like getting lessons on how to kiss, from your Mom.
