Trump Tweet on Flag Burning Causes Consternation Amongst Free Speech Advocates

Trump Tweeted –

Donald J. Trump

Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1989 the SCOTUS ruled that burning the flag was constitutionally protected speech.
But in 2005 it was Hillary Clinton who challenged that ruling by introducing a bill that would impose fines and jail time for flag burners.
So, is Trump tweaking Hillary?
  1. Since one of the approved methods for disposing of a worn Flag is burning, I would hope that Trump is playing head games here, as he has in the past. Anyway, you can’t hurt the United States of America by burning a piece of cloth. There are more important issues to be addressed today.
  2. If burning the flag is “speech” then why isn’t the burning of the burner “speech” as well? Both promote some political view.
    The simple fact is that what cannot be reconciled is irreconcilable.
    Burning is an “act” – whether burning the flag or burning the burner.
  3. I read on another blog yesterday that Trump is just trolling dems and the media to finally say something against hitlery, because she floated getting a law passed just like that when her husband was president, but it was quietly buried.
  4. Whether intended or not, Trump succeeded in forcing the Left — which has for weeks been screaming about shutting down news sites they disagree with and silencing opposing voices on Facebook and Twitter — to come out in defense of “free speech.”
    Much like “winning,” Trump is delivering us a heaping helping of Schadenfreude each and every day.
    .@captainanglin Anyone can burn their US flag as a 1st Amendment right. If they try to burn mine, I’ll introduce them to the 2nd Amendment.
    A year in prison sounds like a good start.
  6. @Dianny Oh yes, it was intended, it offered the exact same penalties as the beast put forth in ’05.
    Trump is trying to teach the adults a lesson they should have learned in kindergarten.
    It’s getting pretty funny how the Progs on the short bus are so easily trolled. I guess research is a thing of the past, it’s all “feelings” now. Never ceases to amaze how people sitting at the most powerful research tool ever developed are so easily fooled and can be so willfully obtuse.
    I learned fast not to touch a hot stove. Trumps rheostat is set to inflame, they keep touching him in hate and ignorance, only to get burned again.
  7. had a good laugh when I saw this on the news last night. Two laughs really, one for the tweet, one for the reaction.
    They still don’t get it, never will. I think there are re-runs of ‘All in the Family’ on another channel when the news is on.
