Most people do not realize we are still in an ice age. At present, the earth is apparently in an interglacial warming period, but we are still in an ice age none-the-less.
Before we take drastic measures to correct a perceived problem, we need to more completely understand (a) how climate works, and (b) how any widespread action on our part affects the climate. For example, in “Playing God In Yellowstone,” the author advocates a case that trying to regulate Yellowstone’s wildlife has, in many instances, done more harm than good. As another example, some states (I’m looking at you California) decided it was a good idea to prevent forests from ever catching fire – making the inevitable forest fires hotter and more destructive that nature intended. It seems our politicians and environmentalists really didn’t understand how forests work or what adverse outcomes are likely if forests are not permitted to burn once in a while.
When it comes to climate change, too many people are content to have politicians decide the issues and the purported remedies. Newsome decided to blow up dams so salmon could get to spawning grounds, and now water necessary for agriculture may be restricted in many areas. The government declared a war on poverty 60 years ago, but we still have a lot of poverty and, particularly in black communities, the family unit has been damaged or destroyed. Our politicians are good at getting elected and then getting re-elected, and that’s about the extent of their expertise in anything.
I’m not advocating ignoring the issue of global climate change or trashing the earth just for fun and profit. I am saying that we should damn well know how climate works and gauge whether or not we are potentially doing more damage.

I just read a science fiction book (Termination Shock by Neal Stephenson) in which sulfur is shot into the atmosphere by a Texas billionaire in a geoengineering attempt to control global warming. I’m a big fan of Stephenson, and any sci-fi story needs suspension of disbelief, so I figured I’d give it a shot. So this idea is out there.
