The Organization of American States was officially established in 1948 and currently has 35 members nations from the Western Hemisphere. It’s dedicated to “peace and security” across the continent and “promotes and consolidates representative democracy.”
Venezuela intends to be the first nation in OAS’s history to voluntarily withdraw. The move comes in response to the head of the OAS calling on the socialist Maduro government to hold general elections as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the death toll had risen to 29 among protestors opposing the Maduro government when a 20-year-old was hit in the head with a tear gas canister.
