4. Our ANG unit deployed to Turkey. Many of the weekenders were in the construction trades. They were appalled at what Turkish contractors and building tradesmen got away with. Some areas there simply were no building codes. I’d like to hear what they say about these videos.

6. Yes, building codes matter, but only to a certain level; 7.5 and most places are in deep trouble. Add to this old infrastructure (codes are reactive to specific failures) and yes, wrath-of-God level of damage results. Thinking back to that condo collapse in Florida a year or so ago, I’m disinclined to throw stones.

7. The 1964 Alaska earthquake was 9.2 and killed 131 people. 60 years later those turkeys in Turkey still can’t build worth chicken crap. The Darwin theory in action.

8. When living in Deep Southern Illinois, we were near the New Madrid Fault line. We had Earthquake preparedness training and drills yearly in cooperation with Kentucky and Missouri. Having moved ten years ago to Ohio, I am certain the drills continue. SW Ohio like many mid-west and Southern states remain if areas where damage could occur.

9. I was in the Coachella Valley when the 7.3 Landers quake hit and I remember that very well 30 years later. The Richter scale is, I believe, exponential so a 7.8 is magnitudes greater than a 7.3.

   I’m sure contractors in Turkey cut corners and older buildings are not “earthquake proof.” But a 7.8 will cause a lot of damage wherever it occurs.

11. @Aussie Lover: More than 5,000 people are dead after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southeastern Turkey. Don’t know about our government’s involvement, but I do know Turkey is getting their ass handed to them. Total destruction, 1,000X worse than what happened to the World Trade Center. The buildings here are already rebuilt bigger and better. Turkey was sent back centuries with this recent quake. GOOD! The Lord works in mysterious ways.
