I suppose some people say he wasn’t great but possibly that is because he was playing in comedic movies and not brooding and dramatic while playing. He seems like a great player, but what do I know?! My mom forced me into piano lessons and I hated it. I was way more interested in my horses and tennis. 😁

The foue brothers were certainly talented. What is considered great? In reading up on Harpo Marx, he was self taught but made fun of by his harp playing professionals who considered themselves “experts.” It bothered Harpo so he hired a Harpist teacher. After hearing him play, she told him that he didn’t need a teacher, and could he teach her how to play like him!

The so called experts can pound sand…..

See the dates the movies were produced. There was no high tech electronics to enhance the music either in the piano/harp, during the recording or afterward. That is pure music. Both Harpo’s and Chico’s improvisations are fabulous, especially considering the songs were just ad-ins to already great comedy movies.

When Chico was young, his mother gave him money for piano lessons. He spent the money and taught himself to play. None of the so called experts are talented enough to do that. He’s one of the greats.

Plus he always sported that flip chapeau.
They should bring those back.

In order to make it look as easy as he did, he would have had to put in many hours of work, as well as being a natural talent. All the great artists are like that.

He’s better than me and I took lessons for a couple years. Can’t play a note now so I guess Mom made a poor investment.

And he probably did it in one take.

That was great! What a great musician! As a kid I always enjoyed Chico’s piano much more than Harpo’s harp.

After watching that video, I think He may have been the inspiration for Victor Borge.

When music was music and musicians were musicians.
Alright. If the next question is “Was Groucho Marx funny?”, I’m done.
Not Van Cliburn or Sergey Rachmaninov great, but good enough to give Groucho time to re-touch his painted mustache.
but great piano concertos should be a feast for the eyes as well as the ears;

Gifted, but the songs are silly.
Polka Polka Polka!
I taught Chico piano.
