This is Mini.

W’ll let the owner come forward if they wish to in the comments.

  1. Awwwww, Mini is a Maxi heart!!!

Fur, you’re paintings are better than the photos! Wow! Your painting of my Zoe kitty is so realistic, I think she watches me as I walk past the painting!

  2. THAT’S MY GIRL! Thank you for posting this, BFH!

Mini is a rescue, who is as far as the vet can tell us, about 13-14 years old. We found her where she had been taken in by some relatives of my wife’s, but she was tossed like a rag doll by their Pit, so my wife took pity on her and took her into our house. That was 11 years ago, and we’ve been blessed by her since.

The pit bull must have been quite a learning experience for her, because since she’s come to live with us we’ve added to our cast of characters, and whether it was a 20 pound Bichon or a 110 pound Boxer, she’s the BOSS lady, and they actually defer to HER. She’s 3 pounds of sheer bossiness, and tells the HUMANS what to do, TOO.

She’s a dignified older lady as you can see by the white hair on top of her crown – she used to be fairly close to black – and she’s getting the hip dysplasia that is a risk with the Chihuahuas, but she’s still got this “Puppy” streak that you can see here. She loves her momma, and wants to be close to her any way she can, and one way she does this is by taking over any garments my wife takes off and making them her own.

I was casting about for a gift for Valentine’s Day, and my eyes happened upon the ‘Pet Portrature” tab. I had this picture and started talking to BFH about timelines and prices and such, and he was very easy to work with.

I think he may have concerned him about the pants, however. At one point, he asked me if I wanted her painted without them, to which I replied that the pants were kind of the point. He probably thought I was crazy, indicated this would be somewhat new territory to him, but said he’d get on it and let me decide when I saw the finished product, and no pressure if I didn’t like it.

Really, I was less worried about the pants than the soulful look in my girl’s eyes. And these fears were groundless, because he captured it ALL to perfection, as you can see. I was very impressed with what he did, and my wife even more so. We are planning to get one of her “Brother” very soon.

I wanted to capture Mini for another reason, too. She’s having some issues that come with age, and we thought we would have to give her mercy at one point because she was crying in pain from back and hip problems, and she’s also got an enlarged heart. The vet figured out a cocktail of Gabapentin and some cardiac meds for her, though, which my wife faithfully administers, and this made her more active and put the pain in check, for which I thank God, but I know we can’t keep time at bay forever, and I wanted this as a memento to the love that God showed us through our baby dog, and a reminder of how He sent her in the first place to help us through a very troubled time in our lives.

I thank God for every minute we have with her, I thank my wife for taking such good care of her, and I thank BFH for immortalizing her. You should be very proud of your God given talent, BFH, thank you for sharing it with us, and I hope I can get another one in your rotation very, very soon.

    God Bless,

  3. Really nice painting!

Supernightshade, thanks for telling us about Mini and her story. Have your wife give Mini a kiss and big hug from me. She is darling. Mini, I mean!

  4. BFH, awesome capture of Mimi’s eyes, face, expression, fur and fabric covering her. Love it. Makes me want to cuddle her. (Except that the first, last and only Chihuahua I tried to pet 60 years ago snapped at me immediately.)

  5. SNS, thanks for the behind the scenes story. I got a bit teary at the talk about giving her mercy. Been there and it’s never easy, but it’s the price we pay for the larger-than-life love we receive. She is so precious.

  6. Claudia, thank you for understanding what I meant. I had a precious little guy named Cyrus before her that got a really nasty blood disease, and there was nothing we could do but end his suffering. He died literally in my arms, I felt his spirit leave and was destroyed by his loss and grateful he was no longer tormented all at once. We were all disconsolate, but it was extra terrible for me for one small reason…

My son had to have 3 surgeries before he was 1, and since he was a baby, the hospital had an “induction room”, where they would start the general anesthesia in the parents arms, taking them at the moment they went fully under for intubation in the next room. Because of my background with things medical, I was the lucky parent. I understood how important it was to lay him down quickly and gently, and I also knew exactly what would go on in the next room.

I will NEVER forget what it was like the first time my newborn son went completely flaccid in my arms.

…and it was the EXACT SAME FEELING when my Cyrus died.

This hit me pretty hard because of that, and I had to actually leave my wife to handle the details after I gently laid down Cyrus’s now-empty vessel. I could do that, but I could not stay in the room any longer…because I could look at my SON, and it was like a goose walking over his grave, to think what MIGHT have been had HIS gone wrong.

I thank the Lord it did not. I thank the Lord for my time with Cyrus, just as I will thank the Lord for my time with Mini when it’s over.

And I am thankful that there are some in our little community, such as you, Claudia, that can understand and share these things.

    Thank you.

    God bless,
    SNS

  7. BFH, you are a master.

To Mini’s ‘owner’, a term I use because other’s seem trite, you have a beautiful dog, and a portrait you can always count on.
