  1. Bovine excrement.
Our kids grew up with well water and Toothbrushes.

DH and I have been living with reverse osmosis drinking water for 30 years, and straight well water prior to that. We had to go with RO when the water table changed our great tasting water to yuk. Dental conditions are non- existent in our household, with the exception of the kids getting braces, and some congenitally missing teeth.

  2. Actually I’ve read that the Inuits have the healthiest teefers around. Attributed to chewing on whale blubber. Not sure that has any relevance to this story, but there you go.

and what is a ‘Public health researcher?’ No credentials?

I’d tear into this pretty good, but don’t have a lot of time right now. But-
“,,,The target population of this study included children and adolescents between the ages of 0–18 years living in families whose incomes met Medicaid requirements.”
“Data were secured from all Medicaid dental claims records submitted during 2003, three years prior to cessation, and 2012, six years post-cessation, for all Medicaid-eligible children…”

    FIrst off- stale data.
Second- It is data of Medicaid recipients only. DId that population go up in number during the sampling periods? The sample is from 2012 and that is at the start of obama’s second term, a period when medicaid recipients and use greatly increased. Where are the statistics for non-medicaid recipients? They used to call that a control group. This study could also be used to argue for better teaching about oral health practices of medicaid recipients.
Was it even considered that these people, being in Juneau, and having Medicaid, went to the dentist because it didn’t cost them anything and they didn’t have anything better to do?
What ticks me off, is that a very simplified version of something like this is presented to the public, and they accept and run with it.
I can look at this study and conclude, more concisely than they did, that obama causes cavities.

…Arctic Sea ice is almost gone!
    …ocean levels are way up!
…polar bear populations are exploding while confined to shore!
    …Juneau’s homeless population has skyrocketed!
…incidences of autism are through the roof!
…Trump Derangement Syndrome is a pandemic.
…killer whales are eating the children!
    …this makes no sense!

  6. Sister used to be a social worker in Soldotna Alaska. Her hubby was the dentist. I have heard from her repeatedly that a disproportionate number of residents rely on gubmint services.

Anyone in Health care can tell you, cradle to the grave reliance on subsidized health care also leads to a grossly noncompliant attitude towards being responsible for your own health.

The up thread observation about the data allocation is spot on.

  7. The problem isn’t caused by the lack of fluoride in the water. It’s the excess of sugar, fructose, HFCS in soft drinks, fruit juices, etc. Next time Juneau should link banning both if they want to go down that road. There are parents making the terrible choice of putting soft drinks & fruit juices (not much difference between the two) in baby bottles with the result being three year olds with most of their teeth rotten and requiring surgery to extract them.

  8. I grew up in a town that fluoridated the water and all these years later I only have half a cavity. Of course, I regularly floss and brush and use two different mouthwashs as my strict regimen.

  9. What I’d like to know is who’s paying for this research? That would tell us a lot.
Also, there’s plenty of research showing that the reason so many people have hypothyroidism is because of fluoridation. Pure water is the way to go. And stay away from high fructose corn syrup, which, aside from creating cavities, also creates lesions in the lining of the arteries (epithelium). The body then sends cholesterol to patch up those lesions. Big med, big pharma, big agri, and big food are all working hand in hand at our expense.

  10. Buuuuuuullllllll shiite. I grew up with well water and unfloridated water in Germany. No cavities and the dentist says my teeth are hard as rocks. He also said he sees few cavities in people who have well water. We also have had well water for the past 29 years plus a filtration system.
Tooth brush, paste and dental floss. Don’t need any government mandated crap chemical.
