IWF.org: Best Idea Ever! The Gentleman’s Club in a South Carolina Public School –
Quote of the Day:
“I was thinking maybe if I have the boys dress for success,” Nelson said to WCSC. “When was the last time you saw someone fighting in a tuxedo?”
–Raymond Nelson, student support specialist at Memminger Elementary in Downtown Charleston, South Carolina.
Nelson, who works with at-risk children, came up with a brilliant idea during a break: Why not help young boys to become young gentlemen?
Thus was born the “Gentleman’s Club,” which meets every Wednesday and attracts dozens of young men from the first through fifth grade, who show up in their Sunday Best. The club’s motto, is “Look good, feel good, do good.”
“I know a lot of them struggle because a lot of them don’t have men at home, so I just want them to grow up and think of the things that I teach them,” Nelson said. “They like the reaction of walking up to classrooms and say, ‘Oh, you look so nice and handsome,’ they just love it.”

Woooooo!
“When was the last time you saw someone fighting in a tuxedo?”
…I think it was the last time I watched a Groucho Marx movie
Well, duh, I believe this is the same sentiment behind wearing school uniforms. If you’re dressed neatly/modestly, you’ll take your education more seriously (at least I think that’s what the nuns thought).
Good on him.
One thing I really like is that he teaches them about the concept of chivalry, and manners.
James Bond movie, maybe? I have a mental image of Sean C. in a tux subduing an evil-doer.
Great idea has done a comeback. The school should petition Trump for ties for the boys if the Trump brand makes little boy ties.
“I dost challengeth thou to a duell, thou pooftery fop!” and then the beatdown ensues. I hope the teacher is instilling in these young gentlemen that there is also a time to stand up for yourself and beat the everlivin’ shit outta somebody.
What a wonderful idea. Most people today have no manners. Faultless manners was the first thing I noticed about my husband-to-be. In the workplace, manners are an asset. This teacher will always be remembered, and I bet the students’ grades in all subjects improve.
Geoff C. and I were the “senior” couple (I think we were about 3 years older than the rest in our party) for a pre-wedding night out for a couple along with their attendees. One of the women left to use the restroom. When Geoff C. rose from his chair as she got up to leave, you’d think he had on knight’s armor. lol! The other girls about swooned. As he settled back into his chair I leaned in and said “show off.”
Women are so easy, men. All it takes is not looking and acting like a big ape once in a while.
I’ve always wondered when or if someone would bring back finishing schools. A younger friend of ours was raised in Texas and he and his cohort all took dance lessons. He’s a fabulous waltz-er.
“student support specialist”
ha, ha ha, ha ha ha
back in the good ole days we didn’t call them “student support specialists”.
we called them what they were, “jock strap sniffers”.
Fights in tuxedos?….ever been to an Italian wedding?…
The last time I saw men in suits fighting dirty; GOP debates.
If the kids aren’t paying for the clothing out of their own pocket they won’t care what happens to it. Stupid idea….waste of money.
You see the same attitude at work in Section 8 housing….the subhumans don’t pay rent, didn’t work for it and don’t care about it…..therefore the buildings are turned to garbage within months of
being infested by the two legged parasites.
