Here are some comments:
“Stop importing beef. We want American beef. Help our ranchers.”
“And you should thank @MeriwetherFarms for sounding the alarm on this when you tried to expose us before their infestation had ended. We knew about the risk because of THEIR advocacy to stop you.”
“…now mandate the return of country of origin labeling please. Texas ranchers need this. Save our food supply this is a national security and MAHA issue as well.”
What do the Old world screw worms look like? ugh
^^^^^ ANTIFA
Use American Beef to feed Americans. Do not even think about exporting unless there is a surplus. Only allow Specialty Beef such as WAGU to be imported. Do not import any from a country named Mexico or any country they may try to route their worm infested meat through. Brazilian Beef imports should come to a screeching halt due to the 50& Tariffs Trump just slapped on them.
Pogo
Maybe we should stop paying ranchers in Montana to not raise cattle. Just a thought.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the only way to import the pest is via livestock? Importing refrigerated meat from slaughtered animals is safe, at least as far as the screwworm is concerned, right?
The only imported beef I buy is Japanese A5 Kobe.
Uncle Al
See Mad Cow
It’s ALWAYS something!
And, there is ALWAYS a shot or vaccine or something.
Beware the Alchemists.
Remember This.
I remember driving through central Florida in the mid 80s and there were cattle ranches everywhere. At that time it was the second largest cattle producing state in the US (behind Texas). I drove that same route in 2021 and many of those ranches had closed up and the pastures were getting overgrown. It’s probably worse now.
@Rib Shot — BSE/Mad Cow is transmitted via prions, not flies and larvae. I’m reasonably well informed about the array of food-borne illnesses. My question was deliberately specific about screwworm, and is still open.
Hopefully we can also limit any food imports from China. I’ve read horror stories about what happens to the food that is sold in country and exported.
Uncle Al,
Is there an allowable limit of screwworms in hotdogs or other meats?
I do not know but have heard there may be.
Thanks in advance
Uncle Al,
The first line of the Secretary’s post talks about live cattle, bison, and horse trade.
Uncle Al’s question seems to be, does non-freezing refrigeration kill screwworms?
I would guess not. In the fridge, the little buggers are in stasis waiting to wake up during improper cooking. Then, they enter your oral cavity happy as little clams where hopefully they get chewed up! 🤣
(Somewhere I need to work in the word “carcass” in there! Heh.)
Prions are evil.
