Wisconsin Duck Hunter Kills Wolf in Self Defense

Outdoor Life

A 19-year-old Wisconsin duck hunter shot and killed a gray wolf at point-blank range on Sept. 21 while hunting on public land in Oneida County, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Chase Melton, who was with two other teenagers at the time, has told reporters he had no choice but to pull the trigger. Melton said their duck blind was being surrounded by the pack of wolves, and when a wolf got within about 10 yards of him, he shot it with his 12-gauge and killed it. More

  1. Went for a morning walk way too early no sunlight yet.

They completely ignored me and i was 20 feet from them looked like they were on a mission.

  2. What’s scary about this story is that the game people are treating this as a major investigation to make sure the wolf was shot due to self-defense. 10 yards between him and a grey wolf — apparently hunting in a pack — it’s obvious the wolf was coming in for supper. What’s to investigate?!

Probably not “attacking”, yet. They are intelligent and therefore curious animals. Unfortunately the animal decision chain is short (eef. Ted Nugent) and, despite Hollywoods assertions to the contrary, shotguns do not drop animals in their tracks. Especially animals that size, especially with shot loads.

  5. Multiple witnesses, all telling the same story, dead wolf obviously shot at point blank, teen immediately reported it; what is there to investigate? Beachmom got it right.

This story further reinforces the old advice: Shoot, Shovel, Shut up.

  6. In 2000, I was deer hunting in a tree stand. I thought I heard a doe walking up behind me. When I slowly turned to my right, I saw a female wolf ten yards away. It sent shivers down my spine. It was huge. She stopped and stood there silently for a minute, then turned away and left. I was hunting with a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with 00 Buckshot. It would have killed the wolf instantly at that range.
