Are they delicious?
CSD: There are apparently too many elk, particularly in eastern and northeastern Wyoming, and lawmakers, ranchers, hunters and the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish are in a quandary over how to handle it.
“I always tell Game and Fish that elk are their wild horses,” Jim Magagna, executive vice president of the Wyoming Stock Grower’s Association, said Friday.
He made his remarks during a meeting of the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Travel, Recreation Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee. His reference to wild horses was a comparison to the tenuous line the Bureau of Land Management walks in balancing various groups’ stakes in the management of Wyoming’s mustangs.
Magagna said that in places, elk populations are “three or four times” over the Wyoming Game and Fish department’s herd objective numbers, and some ranchers are starting to feel overrun. more
I call east coast whitetail deer “rats with hooves”.
These must be the mountain version.
Well they are FREE RANGE and GRASS FED! And make pretty good chili!
I don’t know about the elk population or Wyoming, but I know around here the deer population is out of control because fewer people hunt and the state wildlife department’s idea of increased tags is nowhere near enough, you can’t allow one extra buck and one extra doe and expect to make a difference with how few hunt. It’s like they’re using numbers from 30 years ago of tags instead of today. It sucks for us with the deer tearing up fence, bringing in ticks and worms and it sucks for the deer, because regardless of how many idiots want to put out corn in their front yard to watch the deer and then wonder why they have so many ticks, it’s still not enough to feed all of them. This year I’ve seen way too many does with twins.
Maybe Dick Cheney and Jackass Joe could do some elk hunting together.
@DOC
Cool, hell I didn’t even realize they knew how to use a stove.
Hmmm. ?
Salt, Pepper, Garlic Cloves, Lemon, Seared over Charcoal.
Prepped with a 30-06, 180gr.
The Ministry of natural resources was getting Sued out East due to the Massive overpopulation of Moose (Meese?) & significant danger to Drivers a few years ago.
Those Progressive “Nature Lovers” will never learn.
Chicago has too many joggers….
Sooner or later, managing wildlife for profit will result in disaster. I’ll never buy another hunting license.
Funny thing is they all disappear opening day of Archery and don’t come back until rifle season closes.
Wyoming has too many elk and NYC has too few. I think the governor of Wyoming should charter som busses and equalize things. Equity baby!
STeve Brown
Bro, what are you thinking? Elk don’t do drive-bys. What NYC would send in return does.
Another case of ‘management’. Perhaps provide all the elk MRNA shots so’s they don’t get COVID. Oh, right, the shots don’t prevent acquisition or transmission of the flu. They’re for ‘management’ of a different population. My bad. Copper jacketed lead injections, the Kennedy special, is probably better… watch your six RFK Jr.
Once you start feeding them, a handful of corn and a ball bat is about all it takes to get your limit.
Next thing you know, they’ll all burst into flames.
To much public land is inaccessible and land locked by private property. Courts have ruled on some land rights and the state of WY passed laws to favor private ownership and keeping the land locked away.

As a kid growing up in the 60’s, I remember a Sunday comic strip about a Paladin type, ‘Have Gun Will Travel’ kinda Spartan hombre. Don’t recall his name or the strip’s, but a recurring central theme was his annual pilgrimage into the wild Northern Hinterlands, in search of the elusive, mythically majestic Elk. All throughout the series he occasionally referenced looking forward to the ritual, almost wistfully reverent, as if the experience would somehow cleansingly center him…focus his place in the scheme of things. That image of him, atop his faithful steed, tried and true lever action lashed down with the tack, trailing a pair of dutifully laden pack horses, as he stoically rode into the fading sun, was always extremely alluring to me at a very elemental level.
I don’t recall much else from the comic, with exception for the idea of a man, alone with only what he could carry, riding out on a multi-months long endeavor. Challenging the wild harshness of his environment, along that quest’s pathway, ever with eventual success, remains etched in my memory.

Then why the hell is it so expensive? There’s ONE store around me that sells ground elk. It has been $14.99 forever, but today it was a big big sale, $10.99 per pack. I still baulked.
It’s a 14oz package too, not even a full pound. Ridiculous.
The seafood mix 1 lb packages with shrimp, mussels, squid, and scallops is a better deal for $8.99.
I stand ready to help. And, yes, elk are delicious. Very delicious!
Brad,
My ignorant thoughts on game disappearing during Hunting Season:
Hunting season opens & suddenly the forests are full of Pickups, Noise, ATV, Wood Fires, Tobacco, Weed, Booze & Music.
Wildlife hears, smells & feels the Foot Traffic.
The Wildlife Lays Low for a Few weeks & Comes out AFTER everyone FUCKS OFF back to the city.
(Don’t forget the FAKE DEER PISS since the real stuff has been banned due to CWD)
I watch how these Modern Hunters Behave and am shocked.
The strip This We Defend is referring to was “Rick O’Shay” and the “Spartan Hombre” was named Hipshot Percussion. I always wanted a logo with his face and OHMBRE Electric on my van.
This We Defend, think you’re talking about RICK O’SHAY.
Back when right was right, and wrong was wrong, and your moral compass was easy to follow.

No Bro, you’re on the money. Not so much bow hunters. But I won’t even hunt a rifle season in Cali. To dangerous.
I wonder how many of these same landowners DON’T ALLOW hunting on their land both rifle and archery. A simple solution would be to add a general license supplement of a FREE elk tag for those areas that are overpopulated with elk and those landowners who do not allow hunting get NO help from the state.
Sell more licenses seems to be an easy solution.
get the peta-aholes to install some elk-trojans
