Yahoo secretly scanned customer emails for U.S. intelligence

Reuters: Yahoo Inc last year secretly built a custom software program to search all of its customers’ incoming emails for specific information provided by U.S. intelligence officials, according to people familiar with the matter.

NSA

The company complied with a classified U.S. government demand, scanning hundreds of millions of Yahoo Mail accounts at the behest of the National Security Agency or FBI, said three former employees and a fourth person apprised of the events.

Some surveillance experts said this represents the first case to surface of a U.S. Internet company agreeing to an intelligence agency’s request by searching all arriving messages, as opposed to examining stored messages or scanning a small number of accounts in real time.

It is not known what information intelligence officials were looking for, only that they wanted Yahoo to search for a set of characters.  MORE

  1. With “Fusion” centers in every state now, you can be certain that the government is searching all emails for flagged words and phrases. They can use yahoo, google, twitter, facebook, whatever they want. All that expensive surveillance equipment is not going to go to waste. They can’t use it on the real terrorists because that would be too “islamophobic”.

NSA and FBI are traitors trying to be tyrants. Our Founding Fathers would have hanged the whole bunch.

  2. No AC – Google is shameless, just like the clintons. Google may not come right out and tell you they are doing the same thing, but if they get caught, their response would be, “so what?” In fact, I think Google just does it anyway – the govt. doesn’t even have to ask. But I bet they are not looking for isis type threats – it’s those despicable conservatives who they consider the enemy.

  3. In the old days whenever the Feds needed phone records from Ma Bell, she told them “get a warrant!”. Now,Yahoo, google and other Internet providers response is “you’ve got mail!”. Not even a half- added attempt at following the law.
Do not make the mistake of thinking this is a one way relationship,I guarantee they get some sort of consideration back from the Feds.
