Yellen Signals Willingness To Go Along With Global Internet Tax Regime

The U.S. has dropped a key demand in negotiations over digital taxation of technology companies such as Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook Inc., lifting a barrier that had raised transatlantic trade tensions and prevented an international deal.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told her counterparts at a virtual meeting of Group of 20 finance officials that the U.S. is no longer calling for a so-called safe harbor rule that would allow U.S. companies to opt out of paying such a tax overseas, according to a Treasury spokeswoman.

Yellen said the U.S. will now engage robustly in negotiations on both that issue and on a global minimum tax, the spokeswoman said. More

  1. I think it’s rather funny that President Trump, the man they reviled, shielded the tech giants from overseas taxation, only to have the stooge these companies supported get elected and signal to other nations that they’re now free to take a share of their profits.

This goes through and the rates Service Providers charge for internet access will triple with the result being only those making enough money to pay these new fees will have access and everyone else can pound sand. Just think, when you go to a website a box pops up demanding a fee (tax) just to view the site.
