She says the idea of “hard work will get you ahead” is a white construct and should stop being taught.

Angela Putman received her B.A. and M.A. in Organizational Communication from Western Michigan University. Her Ph.D. is in Intercultural Communication and is from University of New Mexico. Her dissertation is titled Interrupting the Silence: A Critical Discourse Analysis of a Pilot Seminar on Racism, Intersectionality, and White Privilege. For this research project, she developed, designed, and implemented a 3-day seminar that was piloted on a group of college undergraduates. The seminar examined how the students came to understand institutional racism, intersectionality, and white privilege, as well as equipped the students with practical skills for confronting and interrupting white privilege in their daily lives.
Dr. Putman positions herself as a critical intercultural scholar. She uses a variety of qualitative methodologies to critically examine the intersections of multiple identity positions and their relationship with communication in and among intercultural relationships.
Big high falutin’ words, and lots of them, in order to say, “white people suck… and black men find me attractive.” (Did I just say that out loud?)
To her dismay, Putman discovered that these “whiteness ideologies” were widely endorsed by students, many of whom agreed that “if I work hard, I can be successful” and that “everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve success.”
Dismissing meritocracy as a mere social construct, Putman argues that students “are socialized to believe that we got to where we are… because of our own individual efforts,” especially in classroom settings.
“Thus, whiteness ideologies may be reproduced through a general acceptance and unchallenging of norms, as well as through everyday discourse from a wide variety of racial positionalities,” she adds.
Yes, hard work alone may not bring you the success you yearn for. There are other factors, luck being a big one. Race might be a factor, both positively and negatively. Looks is a factor.
But one thing is for certain – not working hard is not going to bring you the success you yearn for.
So if someone takes her seminar/class and doesn’t work hard (or hardly works), will they get a good grade?
