Interesting Engineering
The Chinese government has approved the construction of a massive hydroelectric power plant over the world’s largest dam to be built over the sacred Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Tibet autonomous region. When ready, the power plant will generate three times as much energy as the one over Three Gorges Dam, currently the world’s largest hydropower project.
With its eye on the 2060 deadline to achieve net zero emissions, China has been working diligently to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Interesting Engineering has previously reported on the multiple wind and solar energy projects that have started in recent months while also highlighting the push for nuclear power plants to generate carbon-free energy.
China’s ambitions in hydroelectric energy were evident as early as 2008 when the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s biggest dam, was completed. Power generation began in 2012 and currently supplies clean energy to over five million households every month. More
Frankly I don’t know how “dilligent” the Chinese are about so-called “Net Zero” goals when they’re building new coal plants every week, but I do know that Envirommental Greenies here only want to destroy our infrastructure when they come out against Hydro and Nuclear!
It doesn’t mention how many homes will be submerged, how many people displaced.
Eminent Domain is just whatever Xi says.
Our country is usually short on water and short on electricity. Seems like a no brainer. Well maybe not. Look who represents us.
@Left Coast Dan – They are building this monstrosity in Tibet. The Chinese don’t give a damn about the pain and suffering much less the environmental impact they are going to have in that imprisoned land.
You know, we could be doing the same thing to Canada, right now. Just imagine the cheap green energy we’d generate from our 51st state.
they also use their control of waterflow to influence other countries
they have major influence over the mekong, and now they’re influencing india, and especially pakistan
it ain’t all a bowl of cherries, like this article presents
this is more than meets the eye
it isn’t lipstick on a pig, it’s a skunk this time
The three gorges dam will collapse. It has already shifted a few millimeters. Chinese engineers thought the weight of the dam was enough to hold it in place, so it isn’t anchored to bedrock. China is screwed when the dam fails.
^^^ What Even Steven said!
Can’t wait for Chinga to build a Black Hole Power Plant. Imagine the fun of slipping through an event horizon with a case of the coof.
Bad Brad
You may be shy of water on your side of the country, but over here, especially in Maine we have abundant hydro potential that has been shot down by your Hollywood experts that have even celebrated the destruction of perfectly good dams in the name of Gaia.
I wonder how much area will be flooded when the world’s biggest dam inevitably collapses because of crappy Chinese concrete.
Meanwhile, in N California and the PNW, tree huggers are successfully getting dams removed along with their hydroelectric power. And the clean power lost is being replaced with…coal!
