Google Purges Employee Who Wrote Anti-Diversity Manifesto

Google has fired a senior software engineer for authoring a 10-page screed condemning the company’s diversity efforts and claiming men are biologically more predisposed to working in the tech industry than women, Bloomberg reports. The engineer, James Damore, confirmed his firing in an email to Bloomberg, saying he was terminated for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.”

Damore’s so-called “manifesto,” which went viral internally at Google this past weekend, was first reported by Motherboard, leading to Gizmodo’s publishing of the full text of the document. From there, intense debate ensued surrounding Damore’s viewpoints and the extent to which they undermined Google’s and other tech companies’ continued efforts to increase the representation of women in tech.

The crux of Damore’s argument was that biological differences between men and women are the cause of the gender gap at Google and the broader tech industry. He also said that efforts to remedy the gap are drowning out “ideological diversity” and creating a culture that discriminates against conservative viewpoints.

Google’s initial response to the document was tempered. Danielle Brown, the company’s recently app vice president of diversity, said in her initial statement that Damore’s views are not ones “that I or this company endorses, promotes or encourages.” However, Brown made a point to say that Google is tolerant of opposing viewpoints. “Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions,” she wrote. It was unclear at the time what, if any, action Google planned to take on the matter.

  10. There are women out there who are light years more tech savvy than me. But if they suddenly identified as a man and decided to screw on a pecker and slice off their boobies biologically they’d still and would always be female.

  13. The contrarians I read suggest it would be good to give over google to thems thar wimmens and minorities, so they can bring the company down the path of CNN and uber as fast as possible.

    One of their goals is to find HERETICS and remove them. Look at that campus professor who complained about the “white people leave campus for a day” event? Got fired didn’t he?

    COMPLAIN ANONYMOUSLY You can get the same point across AND drive them literally INSANE trying to figure out who the heretic is. You send a mass email, and like a LOYAL NAZI, the most liberal person in the chain will dutifully hand it over to the local Oberführer.

    No 10 page manifestos like the movie ‘Jerry Maguire’, life doesn’t work that way.

  26. He wrote an internal memo email. For who, I don’t know. But the real culprit is the person that leaked it to the world. Google may have some of the bestest and fastest computers in the world, but still can’t figure out why their staff isn’t mathematically correct according to the general population.
    Apparently their Alphabet only includes LGBT…
