6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Southern California

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An earthquake rattled a large swath of Southern California and parts of Nevada on Thursday morning, making hanging lamps sway and photo frames on wall shake. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The 6.4 magnitude quake measured struck near in the Mojave Desert, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, near the town of Ridgecrest, California.

The United State Geological Survey initially said it measured at a 6.6 magnitude.

People from Las Vegas to the Pacific Coast reported feeling a rolling motion and took to social media to report it.

Local emergency agencies also took to social media to ask people to only call 911 for emergencies. read more

  3. Also home of China Lake Naval Weapons Center. At least it used to be NWC back in 1977 when I moved from there. There was a huge boneyard of B17s back in the day.

  4. I was stationed in Los Angeles area 1970 to 1973 –
    The Sylmar quake hit one morning when I had just shut off the alarm and was catching a few more minutes of rest. First thought was someone shaking my bet, but I was living alone at the time. KNBC with then local anchor Tom Brooks we’re broadcasting from a van in the parking lot. Mostly just a little shaking in my area.
    One Major in the office actually lived at Sylmar.
    The next couple years it wasn’t unusual to feel a few minor vibrations.

  7. …I saw a comment elsewhere that someone said “it’s awesome that our Country is trying to get rid of California on Independence Day”…

    …that said, someone else from the Central Valley pointed out that THEIR part of CA is conservative AND feeds much of the Nation, so maybe don’t pray for ALL California to perish for the sins of the big cities…

    …so, with that in mind, pray for those folks and for our OWN Californians like Left Coast Dan, that God will protect these righteous even as he punishes the wicked…

  11. Ha! I spent a decade one year in Ridgecrest while in the 3rd grade, about ’54. Wasn’t much there then…..not much more now.
    The only thing I left was a few memories….and they can have them.
