EAGnews: WASHINGTON, D.C. – New York yogurt manufacturer Chobani just landed a massive U.S. Department of Agriculture contract for school lunches after years of lobbying lawmakers and President Obama on its products.

The upstate-New York Greek yogurt maker will be distributing its products to schools nationwide next year as a USDA-approved meat substitute for school lunches, capping off a pilot program in a dozen states made possible by extensive lobbying efforts.

Chobani Greek Yogurt first gained approval by the USDA for school lunches in 2013 as part of a pilot program after U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and other New York lawmakers pressured USDA officials to include it in a pilot program for four states. The USDA’s typically years-long approval process for new products was miraculously slashed to only about 8 months for Chobani.  more

  1. This is crony capitalism at its finest. We’re being sold out piece by piece to whoever the highest bidder happens to be and we don’t care or couldn’t care less if it disrupts our fat, dumb, happy lives. Which is why I don’t believe a damned word our so called rulers have to say anymore about anything.

  2. Yogurt is unfit for human consumption.
Whoever came up with this scam in the first place was a genius.
It’s bacteria-infested milk ‘product’ that festers until it’s the consistency of diarrhea.

@Al, the Drambuie is a thousand times better on its own!
Trust me…I know what I’m talking about.
I’m sure Moe Tom and/or Brad will back me up.

  3. Hey, there, give a guy a little poetic license! I had to add something nice to that frozen yogurt.

I’ve enjoyed Drambuie many, many times over the years, sometimes neat, but I prefer it over cracked high-quality clear ice made from filtered water.

However, it does make a dandy ice cream topping, too, especially a good naturally-flavored, high fat content vanilla. Breyers will do if you can’t find better and are in a hurry.

  4. I love good yogurt but Chobani is lousy. No fat so the children will starve.
The best yogurts have the cream on top. Real food usually produced by small dairies.

I also love meat. The kids need meat.

  5. Freeze some vanilla yogurt; top with fresh strawberries and a splash of grenadine syrup. Children WILL eat this.

I’m okay with yogurt as a dessert, but NOT as the main protein source of the meal. A cup of yogurt is about 175 calories; students need way more food than that if you want them to pay attention in afternoon classes.

  6. You know, if there was a (real) caramel swirl yogurt with crunchy bacon bits in a separate packet to be added just before eating … sounds like something I would make sure I tried.

  7. “Allowing children to have healthy and delicious options for their lunch tray ingredients”
How the frig is it an “option” if the kids have no choice to either pick the yogurt or meat? What bloody option is that? Oh yeah, a libtard option. My way of the highway.
