  1. I got a good chuckle out of this! But in all seriousness, this was an era before anyone really understood the relationship between contaminated water and disease. What they did understand was that people who drank plain ol’ water sometimes puked their guts out, screamed with the bloody flux, and died. As a result, much beer and wine was consumed, and that sort of naturally leads to the hard stuff, beer being a gateway drug and all. Tea became pretty popular also, though people didn’t understand that its relative safety came from boiling the water.
