He crashed because he was on one of the most scenic roads in California, and he was busy looking at the scenery instead of where he was going. He failed to negotiate the curve. Even though he got hit by a bus that tried to finish him off, he was lucky.

In the 70s Lewis Meyers went over the side of Malibu canyon. He is one of the many friends I speak of when I mention all those who were lost to drugs and alcohol in my neighborhood.
